Charles Lockwood. the efiicient flag-
man at the Main street crossing. was so
jubilant Monday afternoon that people
remarked about it. He flung his flag
gaily to approaching trains. and seemed
more mindful of pedestrians than ever.

smiles all over his face. shouted as those
certainly a most suprising result in the

Steam Oyster Dredge.
The oystermen of Staten Island are
much interestcd in a small dredge which
has been fitted on the stern of the little
steam oyster boat. James Boyle. owned
by Boyle & McDonald. of Rossville. The
invention consists of a steam dredging
apparatus. which will rake up the oys—
ters from the oyster beds at the bottom
of the rivers at a lively rate compared
with the old~fashioned method of a man
standing up in a boat twisting the famil-
iar oyster tongs. The old-time oyster-
nien shake the heads lugubriouslv and
declare that it won‘t do. but the inven-
tor declares that it won't harm the biv-
alve. and will greatly lessen the cost of
oysters, by saving labor and making tips
necessary a large outlay for oyster
dredges. The little steamboat Boyle will
goover an oyster bed, start up her en-
gines. haul the oysters from their beds on
an endless chain of tongs like the old pat-
and let him stay long enough in one
place to get acquainted.
At least that is what the doctor said.

ers sprouting from Dr. \Vhiie‘s epider-
mis yesterday and the odor of tar was
not perceivable. and the doctor declared

the case are these : “I became divorced
from her three years ago. and for some
time I have been boarding with the Lar-
rabee family at Oyster Bay. Two weeks
ago I went to Connecticut and Miss Ida
Larrabee. a seventeen~yeanold girl. so
eompanied me to Brooklyn. where I
left her with some-relatives of her family
“I tried toestablish a practice in South
Norwalk. but my ex~wife pursued me and
made the atmosphere so warm that I left
the loan. Mr. Storrs testified that the
entire amount received from Belmont &
Co. went into the city and county
treasury and that a check for $75.0th
was given with. Sands by the controller.
The witness thought that the stock was
taken by Mr. Belmont‘s firm at 1019. and
that Mr. ‘ands‘s conimimiion was one
half of 1 room. It was considered a
favorable loan. and the witness thought
the commission was so too.
“'alter Luttgen, a member of the firm
of Belmont & 00.. testified that his firm
had declined to draw a check for $75,000
to Mr. Sands. as requested in a letter
from Controller Connolly. on the ground
that they recognized only the Controller
in the transaction. Aaron J. Vanderpoel
Opposed this and said that although fraud
was charged against Mr. Sands, not. a
particle of evidence to show it had been
presented. It was shown. on the con-
trarv, that there was entire good faith
on the part of Mr. Sands.
Luther R. Marsh, also for the defend-
ant. urged that the most that could be
claimed was a technical violation of the
statute. .
Justice Lawrence declared that. under
the charter, Mr. Sands. being a Tax
