through the legislature to investigare
the doings of this committee. The fact
is they got a bill through to take an up.
peal from the findings of theconiiuittee,
but when it reached tht‘ senate. where
both sides were heard. it was hut. two
senators only from a full chamber vol ing
for it. But an investigation before
Judge Sanford. of the superior court.
was had. before whom all the terrible
midnight conspiracy on the dark roads
of Darien. and the hlood-curdliug frauds
of the conspirators. were shown up.
Judge Sanford. after listening with deep
attention one whole day. not only ac-
cepted the conuuittt es‘ report. but CU‘XI‘
mended the manner in which the com
mittee had conducted their investigation.
That terrible tiiuuan, Mr. Louiisbury,
who, with several others has been a tar-
get for disgusting abuse since this strife
began, was as the late election in
his town re-elected to the office of justice
of the peace: also Mr. Bell. another dark
ring. was reelected selectmaii; also two
of the committee who laid out these
grounds and were sued for the design»
tion of natural oyster beds were re—
clected.—and all by handsome Inajorb
ties. Thus have the people of Darieu by
their vote shown, with few exceptions
at most. that it is not they who are com~
plaining of what has been done in their
town. but on the contrary it speaks
plainly that they believe the committee
was right. in laying out these grounds,
and the committee appointed by the su-
perior court also was right in finding
them not natural oyster beds.
No doubt but much of what has been
written heretofore has been done to cor:-
trol public sentiment and sympathy,
and to invite uasiatunce by some wise-
acres who know little of the facts beyond
what has been ,told them, and should
their names meet with public exposure I
believe that. the people at last would find
that. they had been readiugof how much
certain railroad men. farmers and gro-
cerymen know about natural oyster
beds.
Much more might be said in answer to
what has been written about these
unds; but fearing that I um getting
lengthy I will only add that I challenge

trial progress of recent years is some-
thing for us to congratulate ourselves
upon but other nations have had a share
in it if we have only the eyes to look be-
yond our own borders. “'9 have. how-
ever. some advantages that the nations
oi the old world do not possess. advan-
tage whichitlie Republican to all appear-
ances quite ignores. From some of Its
utterance we. might infer that the inhab-
itants of some desert island have only to
hedge themselves in with a protective
tariff to make themselves the possessors
of untold wealth. Our country is new
and still sparsely populated. lts soil has
not been exhausted by centuries cultivi-
tion. its treasures of mine and forest are
still a storehouse for the future. Our
land is not. in the possession of a few. to
even the smallest portion of which the
mass of the people have no possibility of
obtaining a right. “’e are not taxed to
maintain a wealthy aristocracy. Our
government does not take hundreds of
thousands of the flower of our youth and
manhood from the productive forces of
the country to fill up armies which all
are taxed in some way to support. Above
all we are a or the most part. made up of
people who have all the traditions as
well as the institutions of freedom. Are
all these things nothing when
we are looking for the caus-
es of our national prosperity ? For
myself I believe they are main factors in
the problem. To shut our eyes to them
all and say that our prosperity is the
beneficent-result of u protective tariff
