Mr. Asch expresses himself as perfect-
ly satisfied with the work of the fire de-
partment. lle will secure at once. if
t‘OS‘itbli‘. a factory in which to continue
his business. and will iebnild on the site
of the dost royed building. its soon’as pos~
sililc. The works gave employment to
about :1 hundred bands. who will tempo-
rarily be thrown out of employment.
Several of our hut iimnufucturcrs lost
stock which was waiting to ‘oe formed
into but bodies, and will irobably be
somewhat inconvenienced or a short.

The original portion of the building
destroyed was raised just thirty-one
years previous to its destruction—the
day after the druwbridgc calatiiity. It
had been enlarged recently and was well
adapted to the business for which it: was
used. -
Mr. Ascb had taken every precaution
against. tire. and had his factory supplied
with hand grenades,
and general appliances for puimig out
any incipient fire. The hand grenades
were used, but the fire was too for nd~
vaueed for them to be effective. This is
his busiest season and hs was receiving
large Consignments of furs from Europe,
and had orders in the various depart-
ments to keep them in full operation to
July 1.
A general sentiement of sympathv is
expressed for Mr. Asch and. his emp oy~
eees. and special regret that this misfnr~
"tune should have fallen to them at this
particularly unfortunate time.
\Vc trust- that Mr. Ascli will be able to
adjust matters so as to proceed with his
businws at once, and soon have a new
factory erected. '
