The first case ever tried by a jury in
the supreme court of Kansas has just
terminated. It was remarkable in an~
other respect. also. as being the first
action in the nature of mm warrantn
ever brought in that state—or in any
other state. so far as at present advised——
to oust an electth oilicer for lack of dili-
gence in the enforcement of a peculiar
statue. The defendant in the case wasa
county attorney. accused of not per-
forming his duty in the prosecution of
violators of the Kansas proliibitory
liquor law: and the jury found him
guilty. upon which verdict the court
will remove him from ollice.

Church (‘hornl singing.
The work of the t‘hurch Choral Union
in this city is a quiet btit important
branch of church work. whose effects
will be felt more in the future than they
are at present. Much has already been
accomplished. and much is being done
at the present time. The object of the
union is to encourage and improve con-
gregational singing by teaching mem
bers of the churches to read music at
night. and to know such other matteis
as are necessiry to correct singing. The
attempt made at teaching music in the
ublic schools was an acknowledged
ailure. The European method was
used. and this is said to fail nine cases
out of ten.

This will probably be the last time our
people will have a chance to hear him in
he goes to conference next. month. and
in all probability will receive some other
appointment than Rowayton. Let there
be a good congregation.
Mr. and Mrs. \Vm. Lockwood returned
from their winter home in Florida last
Friday, nearly a month sooner than they
expected. Mr. Lockwood's health being
so poor after they started that instead of
stopping on their way home as they ex-
pected to do they were. obliged to come
directly home. They brought a number
of curiosities with them, among which
were samples of Florida soil. Florida
beans. and a paper printed in the town
where his place is located. Mr. Frank
wood. returned on Saturday.

Conclave of the Connecticut (ii-and (‘om-

The annual conclave of the Connecti~
cut Grand Commanderv. Knights Tem-
plar. commenced at Norwich. Monday
evening. at the Asylum of L‘olumbiau
Commandery of that city. The work in
the order of the Temple and the degree
of Knight of Malta was exemplified.
Ueing witnessed with great pleasure. es~
pccially that of the latter degree, which
is rarely worked in full in any command-
ery in the state.
At the conclusion of the work the via-
itors were conducted to Grand Army
hall. escorted by Colombian command~
ery. wheiiabrilliant banquet wasserved.
