known and worthy citizen died “an,
L‘llth. at his residence on Spring street a
few minutes before 13 o'clock noon.
The announcement of his death will be
received by his fellow citizens with sur~
prise as Well :is sorrow. It was not un-
til within a very few days that his illness
assumed a threateniiig character. A few
weeks ago while at work at his regular
occupation of carriage making a piece of
iron flew from the anvil and struck him
on the arm. The injury appeared slight
and for some days did not disable him.
The arm. however. gradually grew pain~
ful and swelled up. and resort was
had to medical advice. In spite of all
that could be done it grew worse and
worse until at last symptoms of a ina-
!ignaut type of erysipelas set in which
fatally poisoned the system of the pa-
tient.
The deceased was born in New ‘anaan
Sept. Sth, 1826. At about the age of
eighteen he went to Norwalk to serve
his time at the horswshceing and black-
smithing trade. \Vhen out of his time
he came to Stamford. and was employed
by Mr. Andrew J. Bell. in the old sho i
which stood on the site now occupi
by the Town Hall building. After work-
in gas a journeyman for Mr. Bell six years
he became a partner in the concer _ and
in about. a year thereafter Mr. Bell ith-
drew. leaving the business in the hands
of Mr. Lockwood. who continued in that
location for many years. exhibiting the
the steadiness. perseverance and indus‘
try. which, together with «integrity
character. earned for him an honorable
competence and the respect and esteem
ofall his fellow citizens—Stamford Ads

Then the train hands went forward to
ascertain the cause of her stoppage and

cushions and canvas door curtains had
been set on fire by the scattered cinders.
but the blaze was soon extinguised. The
engineer and tireman picked themselves
up uninjured. but the conductor could
not be found. It was snowing furiously
and the other two men walked towards
the train and on thaws;
hands malaria; look for them. l‘bey
told them of Soarles‘s disapp-araiice and
kept on towards the train. The search-
ing party found Mr. Searies painfully
making his wav through the sun zabout
He was hath and in such a dazed con-
dition that he was going in the direction
of, New Haven. Had not the train hands
found and taken charge of him he would
doubtless have wandered. about until he
had perished in the bitter storm. lit
jumping he had evidently struck his
faceagaiiist a rail or an end of a tie. as
his face was badly bruised. several of his
teeth being knocked out. He was as-
sisted back to the train and made as
comfortable as possible in the caboose.
Some of the trainincii went to the only
house near by. and asked that the. lll‘
jured man be takcd in. but the request
was refused. One of the brakemen
train ~d through the storm to the Mil-
ford t epot. a distance of three mile-sand
telegraphed from there to New Haven
for an engine. One was sent down and
arrived in Milford with the disabled h»
comutive and the care about 6:30 o‘clock
\I y morning. The' extra engine
went on to Harlem river with the freight
cars. The conductor was attended by a
physician in the morning. One of his
teeth, which had been driven into the
roof of of his mouth, was extracted. as
were also six other teeth that were bro-
ken or loosened. He was also painfully
but not. seriously scalded about the neck
and hands. Engineer Ross had his neck
and hands somewhat scolded and was
slightly bruised about the face. Both
ears were frost-bitten as a result of his
exposure during the night. Allen. the
fireman. was considerably scalded about
the legs and bead. Both he and the
conductor will probably be laid up for
several days. No blame is held to attach
to anyone. '
