greatest. attractions on the stage. Of the
merits of this play. one of McKee Rau-
kln's greatest productions. in is hardly
necessary to speak. so well are they
known to ever thoutrogoer. The piece
is not a rough rder dramatic lma ined
by some. but, as has been remark , “A
sweet. pure, simple story of our day." It
has its sunshine and its loom. in bright
coloured hopes, and its a oded sorrows.
It. lives among the plays that fathers.
mothers, and their children, can see
again and again, and each time feel bet.-
tor for it. It is a familiar narrative of
thrilling story of the home fireside which
touches home in every heart.“ The fol-
lowing bricf synopsis will give an idea
of the nature of the1play:——“49“ is a
name given to an 01 miner. a man of
good education who has exiled himself
from home, in the States. on account of
domestic troubles, and who has lived
and worked in the mines for twenty-five
years, keeping his name and history a
secret. During one of the worst snow-
storm that ever occurred in the moun-
tains. an old Indian squaw, with two lit-
tle white children (about four years old)
lost: their way. and, when discovered.
the squaw was dead, but. the children,
two little girls. were alive, and taken to
camp and brought up by “Misaissigpi.”
the only woman there at. that. time. iss
Bella, one of the children. is pelted and
sent to a fashionable school in San Fran-
cisco, while the other one, poor little
"Carrots." fl. light-footed, merry-hearted
little waif. is left. to take care of herself.
She becomes the special favourite of the
comp, and the sunshine of old “49‘s"
life. At one time she is found singing
and dancing to please the honest-hearted
miners; at another. tending the aickbed
of a or old man; now layln the table
for Party's dinner and linen ing to the
domestic cares of his primative home,
and at. 1386- she is found in spacious
apartments in St. Louis. surrounded
with all the elegance that wealth can
procure." As will be seen from this short
statement of the lot. "49“ is an in-
tensely interesting p ay, and besides this
it abounds with music. songs and 02130.
ruscs that make an extreme] interest-
ing performance. The caste la a strong
one. Lizzie May Ulmer in the leading
character of “Carrots." having achieved
ti great and well merited success.
while the rest of the support is excellent.
The performance has achieved a decided
success wherever it. has been given, and
the comments have been always favora-
ble.

a good house at: Music Hall lost Satur-
daiyovoniug. The whole thing is fun
of the funniest character. and there
were laughs by the thousands as adver-
tised. The entire company is first. class.
and each member seems to enter into
the play in the fullest a irit. Forolaugh.
or many laughs, not big exceeds the

“Only a Farmer‘s Daughter“ drew a
good audience at. Music Hall Manda
evening. The company was a very wen
one and the. play. which admits of the
most eil‘ective driuuatic art. was gone
through with in the main in an insipid
and mine manner. With the exception
of Emma Frank as “Molly Stark.‘ and
Adelaide Claire as the adventures, the
actors appeared as the remnant novices,
being weak in voice—it ing impossible
to hear the lines of Miss Kinsy, who M-
sumed the Farmer‘s Daughter, except in
rare instances six seats back from the
stage. In a few words it was an excel-
lent play very poorly played.
