Editors Sarawak—The downpour of
rain on Saturday has again discolored
the hydrant water, and it will require
several days or weeks for the mixture
now held in suspension in the water in
the distributing reservoir to precipitate.
As vegetation is now in its green state.
the water contains more mineral and
animal than vegetable matter, and is not
perhaps no injurious to the system as in
the fall and winter months. when de-
cayed vegetable matter predominates:
but the look and taste of the water is not
inviting, There is but one permanent
method of correcting ouch discoloration
and taste. and that is filtration. That.
the board of water commissioners, u at
present constituted, vvill without oom-
pulaion from the powers that are. pro-
vide for such filtration. is too much to
be hoped for. and that u plication should
be made to the State ard of Health
for relief by our citizens, is self evi-
dent.
There is another consideration con-
nected with this qucstion that the tax-
payers of our city should understand.
that in. that when water is carried
through iron mains without efficient fil-
tration, portions of the mineral and
vegetable matter adhere and become in-
corporated with the inner portion of the
mains and gradually reduce their carry-
ing capacity. and judging from what has
happened in a near by city. the mains of
our water works will have to be taken
up in lets than fifteen years, in conse-
quence of such filling up, unless the
water is purified before being allowed to
enter them. As the mains are the most
costly port of the works, it certainly
seems “pennv wise and und foolish '
not to expend a few bun red dollars for
a filter. which besides giving our citizens
good healthy water. wood in a few
vears save our cit many thousand dol-
are in replacing lied up mains. The
owner of the water works in the city of
Bridgeport informed us a few years
aince, that in taking up a 12-inch main
leading to the factories in the northern
portion of the city. that had been laid
down thirteen years. its on ity was
found to be less than one-ho! of what it
was when laid down. and that the filling
up was in consequence of the [or
amount of vegetable matter broug t
down in the water mains. Since that
time Bridgeport has acquired running
streams of water loading to their reser-
voirs, and now enjoy good water.

been put in circulation by a. New Mi -
ford paper and 3 Windsor Locks sheet,
in which I nm to resented as having
been the editor 0 an obscene news-
per. As you copied the libel, I be-
ieve you. will be willing to give my
statement equal prominence. I never
was mlifcr of the per alluded to. I
runner wrote a line}; it. My only con-
nection with the paper is that of its
rinter. Inever know what goes into
it until 1899 it in print, unless by acci-
dent or in exceptional cases. The paper
is not an obmneone. It is designed for
circulation among medical men and is
not for sale on the streets, nor at the
news-stands. Circulating among med-
ical students and practitioners it may
contain some articles not designed for
general readinf. as is the case_with
many other pub ications, but it is in no
sense obscene. and it can be made to
appear so only by garbled or unfair ex-
tracts. The itter magligncocy of at»
tacks upon me was no apparent that
few papers were misled into copying
them entire. As soon as business per-
mits me to search the criminal records,
that I may learn the date of the facts
in my ion, I shall show the pub-
lic the character of some of my assail-
ants. Until then my friends on rest
in the assurance that my vindication is
sure. I have offered to the origuol Ii-

prove their chute. but they have
