Mr. Robert Sheffield Smith died in
Boston on Saturday last in the 47th year
of his age. Mr. Smith was UM: youngest
son of the late Temperance Sheffield and
Gersbom Burr Sinitli.foruierly of Smith's
Island. and was a brother of Mrs. Joseph
Cox. of Baton Hill. Mr. Smith's remains
were brought to this town and interred in
the Middle Five Mile River Cemetery.

Edward F., who are now in Australia.
They were in this country a short time

report upon the afi’fis and innngement
of the S'ate Board of Education. submit-
ted their report in the Senate Tuesday
last. They submit a bill defining how the
board shall be constituted and its duties,
and recommended several alterations.
The principal changes are to make the
secretary of the board its executive oili-
ccr under its control and direction: to
fix definitely the salaries of the clerk
and agent of the board; to make the
comptroller auditor of all its accounts
and to require a. detailed semi-annual
statement of all expenditures.

Temperance Supper.
The 'l‘cmpcruncex Reform Association
of this city will hold their annual supper
in Music hall on Tuesday and Wednesday
evenings. February lllih and 14th. Com-

Special school Meeting.
A special meeting of the voters of the
Union School District will be held in the
Franklin street school house on Monday
evening, February 12th, The mooring
is called to lay a tax to nice: the neces-
sary expenses of the district.

1875. and bonds to the amount of one
hundred thousand dollail were issued,
and at. the rain of six per cent. Bids
were received for them at the. time. and
the United States Life Insurance (.79.. at

Other bids were received ranging from
eighty per cent. to pan—but. were only
for portions of the whole amount. con-
sequently tho commissioners awarded
the lot to the insurance company. After
holding them for seven and a half years
they decided to sell. and recently sold to
a lilo insurancc company in Hartford
thirty thousand or the bonds—having
twelvn years to run—at one hundred and
nineteen. Forty thousand. due 1005,
are for sale at $1.29.‘,,%. Thirty thousand,
due 1885, at OLMM. This specks well
for the management of the insurance
company. as they will clear by the
transaction about eighteen thousand
dollnnzand it also speaks well for the
management of our city finances. Very
