Mrs. Margaret Sanderson. who died in
New York city the first of the month in
her 86th year. made with her own hands
asilk flag when she was fifteen years
old and presented it to the commandant
of Fort McIlenry. Baltimore. just before
the British fleet appeared in the bay.
During the bombardment. and while
confined in one of the British ships.
Francis S. Kcy saw this flag floating
over the fort. and the sight of it inspired
him to write “The Star Spangled Ban‘
ner.“ Mrs. Sanderson had the flag at
the time of her dccease.

the above namvd bay. We left home on
Saturday afternoon of the 20th of July
for Sag Harbor. i-i‘ci Long Island railroad
where we arrived after one of the worst
railroad rides I ever experienced, it be
ing very warm and the road so dusty
that one at times could hardly breath. or
see across the car. but a ride of
about 4 hours brought us to Sag Harbor,
and into the Nassau House, where we
took dinner. Then wph adrive of about
ten miles to Amazonsett by stage. con-
ducted by Mr. Baker, who makes the
trip very pleasant by socially entertain-
ing his patrons, which seemingly short~
one the ride very much over a long. san-
dy road. at which point we were met
by Hr. and tire. Smith with their beau-
tiful team and taken three miles through
Mosquito Plains. Well there wasa few
of them. but Mrs. Smith had thoughtful.

last we reached Promised Land and with
the lovely ride and fresh ocean air we
get at this point. and with it there was
created a great desire for dinner or sup-
per. and lthink I never relished a meal
more than this one. I think it will not

Smith. clams. dug by Mrs. S. and your
bumble servant; beans. picked by the
servant girl. and lobsters taken directly

the sole supervision of Joe Terry. the

home, which is really a beautiful spot.
not forgetting the most glorious sun sets
ever seen in these Iaiitudes, and taking
all and all. I consider it one of the most
lovely places I have ever seen after travel-
ing over a considerable pmtion of this
world—fishing splendid. yachting and
sailing unsurpassed and especially when
under the guidance of the royal Smith
family. I think if one could spend
more of such pleasant days at the Prom.

ROWAY'I‘ON.
Mr. William J . Craw has returned from
a four months‘ sojourn in Denver. He
says the city is six miles in length and
the last census gave it 35,000 inhabitants.
that it is growing rapidly and they now
claim 60,000. The sun there is remarka-
bly hot, but the nights are cool. The
prosperity of the city is believed to be
permanent on account of the great min-
ing interest.
Last Saturday evening about six
o‘clock two young gentlemen were driv-
ing a handsome horse and top buggy
from Darien on what is known aaCol.
Raymond‘s road. The horse shied at
something on the road and upset the
buggy. throwing the young men a con-
siderable distance. injuring one of them
severely on the side of his face. The
horse continued to run. breaking of! the
top of the buggy and leaving only the hub
on one of the wheels. The horse was
stopped by Charles Thomas near his
residence. Hr. Themes immediately
took the horse loans of the livery stables
in South Not-walk where it belonged.
The horse was very much injured.
Last Friday William filler. of this
place. saved the lives of a gentleman
and his daughter who were bathing at
Rotor: Point. They were from Brooklyn.

near by on the dock and saw their peril,
but Mr. filler Immediately jumped to

Commodore Hilton’s son. Mr. Hanson
Hilton, has just returned from a tour of
the great Leadville mining region, hav-
ing been employed in the examination
of minesas an expert assaycr for vari-
ous companies. He has examined mines
that were 14.000 feet high. where snow
and ice abounds at all times. He has
made an engagement with a mining
company at Leadville to take charge of
a mine for three months. so he will re-
turn in about a week. He has applica-
tions from Utah. and several others far
west. but refuses them to fill the Lead-
villc charge.
Bell Island.
This beautiful Island lying at half mile

changed from a quiet place of residence
of three or four families to a watering
place with some three hundred visitors.

there accommodations for them. Since.
the purchase of the Island by
Messrs. Foster Bros. and Mansfield of

The annual camp meeting of the New
York East District commenced at Brook-
side on Monday. The dry weather has
had its effect in and about. the grove.—
the green of the grass and foliage has
given away to aparched appearance, but
this does not effect the ardor of the wor-

the pavillion. which will accommodate
about a thousand people, while about
the grounds are scattered tents in which
