Iloruc Drowned.
In Westpurt, Monday. Mr. W. ll. Ma-
cready‘s hired man was driving his cm-
ployer‘a colt, and arriving at a fresh
water pond apposite Mr. Rufus Coucli‘a
house, drove the animal in to let. him
drink. This pond, so legends any. has no
balloon—it certainly has no outlet, and
muck. valuable to farmers, accmulatea
there. Farmers had removed some
of the muck, leaving Ii largo holc into
which the animal fall. In his struggle
to get out he sank deeper and finally
passed beneath the surface of the water
and was drowned. The driver seeing
the pcrplcxity jumped into the water and
with a kuifc tried to cut tho harness and
llborutc the horse in doing which he

and wife celebrated Ibo fiftieth anniver-
sary of their marriage on Plane, near

in the case of “Chip“ Smith. who, it will
be remembered had been found guilty of
murder in the first. degroo for killing Au-
aouia‘a chief of police, was found guilty
and sentenced, but a stay of proceedings
had been obtained and the case brought
before the legislature at its laet session,
a unanimous decision was expressed that
the writ of error was insufficient. State
attorney Doolittle moved that the tuna
of vxeculiou bu fixed. Mr. Blydeuburgh
for Smith urged that the date he named
for enough in tho future to minds of his

commutation of the sentence. This was
denied. Smith was brought into court
