ry ?
The precept: summer we happened to
meet. Mr. John Yengling. I mident cud

struction and all through the war, with
the exception of short. periods of him-
ishment brought about by his strong Un-
ion sentiments.
“Lieutenant Jones didn‘t burn the
works, " said Mr. Yengiing decisively, in
answer to the casual remark of an old
soldier who was (lemming on thc sub-
ject.
“I know that nearly 311 the histories say
so. and that. nearly everybody has that
idea; but. at the same time if it. not true.
Harper-9‘s Ferry was burned by Captain
Charles P. Kingsbury. of the Ordnance
Department. dltbougb the credit of the
act has been so largely given to Lieuten-
ant Roger Jones.
“Times were lively and anxious about
Harper‘s Ferry during the spring of 1861.
and as I kept the only segu- sforc in the
place it was a general resort, and I gener-
ally had about the first news of whatever
woa going on.- Ever since the summer
before Lieutenant Jones with about fifty
regulars bud been stationed at. the Ar
serial for guard duty. He was never in
command at the Ferry. the commandant
being Captain Stoddard. the superintend-
ent. who was clenfcd to the Virginia
State Convention as a Union man. but;
who. when the ordinance of secession
came up. votedfin favor of it and then
hurried back from Richmond with all
speed, liOping to accure the fifteen or six-
teen thousand stand of finished arms in
the Arscnal for the secessionista. A8 soon
as we found that Stoddard was going
back on us, a few of on Union men
got together on the night of Much 14111
in the little book room of my store and
wrote a letter to General 80011. telling him
thc state of affairs and asking that some-
thing be clone to save the works and the
arms. We tut. Harry Gray. afterwards
the scout. to Washington with the hm".
After considerable trouble he was allow-
ed to Ice Gencnl Scott. delivered big lot-
tor, cud told his story. The Genenl did
not seem to think there was much urging
in the matter; but bold Gray he would
send up an ember as superintendent. tem-
porarily. and if the story was true about
Stoddard he should be permanently re-
moved.
