Tho Star Route Colon.
\VASHINGTON. Oct. 8.—On the meeting
of the criminal court this morning Dis-
trict Attorney Corkhlll stated it had boon
rumored in the papers that it win the pub
pose of the counsel for defendant: to
move to quash the information filed on
Friday last in the star route matter. He
presumed that before nay thing :could be
done it would be necessary for parties
against whom the information had been
filed to appear in court; but he neverthe-
hcurd by court. two days notice of tho
fact should be given to counsel for the
government and especially to Col- Cook,
the mutant attorney in the star routo

A New Railroad to New York.
Anothcr movement is on foot for a rail-
road from New York to Springfield dad
has William H. Vanderbi t to back it.
President Watt-on: stamd last evening that
about ten do 3 since, Mr. Vanderbilt, who
then at his cw rt villa, telegraphed Mr.
Rutter. his con dentin! agent. to put aur-
veyors at work on aroute for a new rail-
ioad from New York to New Haven. In
accordance with these instructions aur-
vcyors have been at work for: number
of days looking over the territory. The
work now in progress is simply prelimin-
ary and its great importance lies in the
fact that Mr. Vanderbilt has ordered it.
Surveyors have also been at work on the
Springfield end of the line. The reject
is in no we. connected with the arallel
road and r. Watrous ex macs the opin-
ion thnt the new project id not have one
half the merit of the Parallel road plan,
but has the advantage of abundant means,
us Mr. Vanderbilt can build all the rail-
roads he wants to. This is a plan substi-
tuted for that of last year and which was
rendered valuelesa when the Consolidated
company took control of the Canal road,
The statement that the new road would
be running in a 'car is said to be a foolish

road pond and other similar nuisances:

walk.
Many complaints have been made
through the city newspapers during the
past your in respect to the Railroad pond
(socallcd) as a breeding place for miaatnic
and diacusc, and the Council has been
loudly iniportuncd to take some action in
tho matter. In conjunction with this
great public nuisance is another equally
as great. The sewerage from three fuc-
toriea in the western part of our city runs
through tin open ditch for half a mile or
more, poisoning the air and causing n
great deal of sickness, nearly cvcry fam-
ily in that section are affected, and com-
plninta without cud have been made to
the Board of Health that the nuisance
might be abated. I thmforc felt it;
duty in my capacity as Heuth Officer to
recommend to your honorable body tint
the Mayor be authorised to call u apeclnl
city meeting at an early dny to tukc oct-
ioti, as may be thought best in the mutter
above mentioned.
We would also recommend that the city
Surveyor be nuthoriud to make u survey
