In the days that the popular Old \Vell
Ilctcl stood on the atite of the now Ma-
liackcmo Hotel in this city. Uncle Solo-
mon Foote. father of the proprietor. Mr.
Frank Foote. boarded with his son who
kept one of the most popular and favorite
hotels on the line between New York and
Boston. Old Uncle Solomon was a very
remarkable old man. for having his facul-
tica unimpaired and very jovial, so much
so as to attract the associations of those
much younger than himself, but the old
man came very near his end this last
spring. not by sickness. but a gencral
wearing out of the human machinery; but
those who know him here will be greatly
pleased to learn of his convalescence, and
now almost a boy again. who can play as
good a game of checkers as ever. Theold
gentleman in still living with his son at

Mun Killed.
Alexander Veitcb, known as “Sandy"
was killed by the owl train which leaves
this city at 5:18 near Five Mile River on
Sunday morning. “Sandy" waaa. young
man, but. he had a bad record. Lust Sat-
urday he received from Charles Stevens
five dollars for work done for him, also
fifty cents for It job done for “Shop" who
lives in the vicinity of “Sandy‘s" home.
He left his home near “'eut. Not-walk Sat-
urday night in company with his brother
Joseph, Lot Saunders. and Mike Conner-s.

they all got drunk, and it was near morn-
ing when they started for home. and that

that “Sandy" sat down beside the

train came along the cow-catcher struck
him in the head. The train was stopped
as soon as possible after it struck him and
he. was picked up and taken to Stamford
where Dr. Trowbridgc attended him, but

brought to this city Monday and under-
taker Uregorp took charge of the body and
he was buried in Pine Island cemetery
yesterday.

utes they made up their minds to start for

lo and behold when he turned around to

The result was they returned Jionie with
one lonely ccl and three empty bottle-a.
Some of their friends are mean enough to
lay the cause of their misfortune to the
emptying of the bottles. but. they deny
