had been sci on fire in the very center of
the structurc. The fire department rc-

As there was no draft the flames run
straight up the wulls to the the attic. and
it wus not until they had burned bolca
through the partition that the firemen
wern- ziblc to do much effective work.
Then they succeeded very soon in quench-
ing thctlamcs and saving the building.
The edifice was damaged considerably.
but principally in the hallways of the first
11nd second stories. Considerable damage
was uecclszirily done by flooding the
building with water. but the firemen were
careful to cause no mort‘ damage in this
way than they were absolutely obliged to
do, and they ure entitled to credit for the
manner in which tlicy managed. There
is not the slightest doubt but that the tire
was incendiary. and whoever started it
was familiar with thobuildiiig. Tliownr-
den shocld offer :1 reward, and use every
means to ferret out the acoundrel. Tho

The glorious and noisy Fourth has. this
year, been to some a sad and silent one.
It cannot be the same to all. Friends and
relatives, whose merry laugh or timely
jeal. tempered the heat of the mid-sun»

the long journey which all must take to

wanted to get a drink of water for his
