ATTENDANCE.
\Vhile our : ttendance in proportion to
enumeration is fullv up to the average of
the other schools 0 the town, we ave
quite a number of children enumerated
who are apparently not attendants upon
our schools. and while your committee in
their report last year. suggested this as an
opportunity for the truant officer of the
town to exercise the duties of his office by
looking after such delinquents : we re-
gret to say that during most of the past
year there has been no truant oii‘iccr ap»
pointed by the board of school visitors.
ENUMERATION.
The yearly enumeration was made in
January last. by F. S. Lvon. in the most
thorough manner possible. and the whole
number enumerated was 988. an increase
of 60 over the previous year.
DISTRICT DEBT.
The indebtedness of the district has been
reduced during the year $5.000, leaving
the amount 0! notes now outstanding
$16350.

The unsatisfactory arrangement of us-
ing one of the has ments for a school-
room during the pleasant months. when
the attendance of many small Children
causes an overflow. so to speak. of the
primary grade. has been abandoned as far
”possible. and the better and more eco—.
nomicai plan of relieving the lower rooms
by individual promotions to the iiigher
gratks has been substituted. Dunn: the
present year a saving of nearly two hun-
dred dollars has been effected by this
change.
By a prescribed course of study. and by
close supervision, the work of the corres-

and Concord street schools has been
brought into harmony. and our citizms

each of the twp branches of our school by

The subject of penmanship is worthy of
brief notice. The practical importance of
good penmanship is acknowledged by all.
and us of the school will appreciate
the eflorts that are put forth to secure
proficiency in the art of writing. Many

As we were about going to press liist
week a friend rushed in our office and iii-
formed us that a sudden death had tnken
place at Stamford. and the only informa-
tion he could give at that time wn- " that
a woman by the name of Cullen l :i l died
suddenly in Stamford caused ii; .. hein-
orrhngc." Since that time it ha. 3 on dis-
covered that there has been coiliniittcd a
foul deed, and yesterday we visit. d Stani-
ford and found that the p aplc of that
place were greatly excited over what they
considered a cold murder.

day a full account of the aflair up to the

The diath of Mrs. Cullen at the office
of Dr. Trow‘oridge. was so sudden and
there was so much of mystery connected
with it. that it was decided by the Stain-

the examination in that place. on Friday.

nmination was known. ii. warrant for the
arrest of Dr. Trowbridgo was issued rind
he was placed under bonds of $10,000,
Saturday evening. for his appearance be-

A large number of highly credible wit-
nesses. living in the neighborhood of the
Doctor‘s office, gave their testimony. but
as stated above. it mainly showed the fact
of the screams and groans on the part of
the woman.
Dr. Burke gave the result of the pest-
mortem examination at Norivallr. by him-
self and Dr. Gregory.In their opinion the
death of Mrs. Cullen was canard by a.
shock; the post mortem revealed the fact
that the uterus and foetus of three month‘s
development had brcn punctured. and
this physiological circumstance accounted
for the shock and the attendant agony of
the subject. The witness showed that
the injui 3; which bod been revealed by
the poet morwm, must necessarily have
bi en received after the woman .left the
train nt Stamford. The 11‘ mil. of the ex-
amination by Drs. Burke and Giegory had
been. submitted to Drs. Hubbard of
Bridgeport, and of Meriden, and
the latter agreed with the Norwalk physi-
cians in the conclusion reached.
Or. Monday afternoon at 2 o‘clock an
adjourned session of the inquest was
held. As the testimony to be received
was of such a physiological character
that it was not proper to be heard by the
general public, the doors of the jury room
were closed and the luv: utigation was
conducted in a private manner. The tes-
timony Dru. Gregory. Geib and Birch
was heard, the substance of their evidence
sud opinions being in accordnnce with
tho; given on Saturday by Dr. Burke.
The jury remained in deiibemtion un~
