able to secure a livelihood in the business
will bo driven out entirely b tho steam-

now only waiting to see what legislation
will be inlide this winter. They are will-
ing to confine their operations to wind
and soil. provided all do the same. but if
steam is to be allowed they proposc to
use it. These men believe and say that
the effect of the use of steamers will be a
hardship to those unable to make use of
them. and generally detrimental to the
growth and culture of oysters and to our
city, and do not want to use it. preferring
to confine their operations to sailing ves-
sels. but they. in self protection and in or-
der for successful competition will be
forced intuit. unless ii; is stopped alto-
gether. If prohibitory legislation is not
obtained this winter. next summer there
will besdozen steamers where there is
one now. and the oyster business will be
in the hands of the few. instead of the
man . The next meeting will be held on
the 8th.
