in the most thorough manner. and to the
acceptance of every body but the select«
men. still he would be subject to a fine of
seven dollsrs and to imprisonment. for
thirty days: or he might murals him in
such a manner as to be acceptable to the
selectmen and nobody else. and not be
subject to any nudity. The thing to be
complied with under this law is that
which is specifically stated by the select.
men and, unless they inform the people
whut sort of muaaling of dew will be ac-
ceptahle to them the duty imposed upon
them by the act has not been performed.
What has been done is aimply an evasion
of the law. and is so plain or to deceive
no one. and until the selectrnen order
dogs munled in some manner the law is
inoperative. The penalties imposed by
the above law shall be upon those who
full to comply with its conditions. one of
which is that owners of dogs shall mus-
xle them to the acceptance of the select-
nien: will the selectmnn let us know what
will be acceptable to them? We are in-
formed that the selectmen in publishing
the notice quoted acted upon the ndvice
of prominent lawycru. This we very
much doubt. unless it was given as the
best way to dupe the people. and we
hardly think any of our lawyers would
stump to that. or the full board of select-
men be guilty of so mmn nnteusurc to
avoid official mponsibility or to thwart
the full nnd effective opemtion of n wise
and much needed law for the mourity of
the lives of the people.
The remark is common about many
laws that they are inoperative. This ii
true. but in most cases it is no hull of the
laws but almost invariably is owing to u
failure of the pmper othcinls to enforce
them. This dog law ought to be enforced.

The New England clam bake originated
in n joyous Indian festival at the time of
green corn. when the warriors and saute
moms were sccustomed to assemble with
their families at favorite places of resort
along the sen shore. now marked by im-
mensc heap of the refuse ahclla left by
these ancient mollusk enters: and then, for
many days in sumwion. they were won-
ted to delight themselves by consuming
vast quantities of shellfish and twisting
cars steamed in sea weed laid on red hot
stones. The elements of such a. feast are
quaintly described in s poem found in
“ New England Prospects.“ a book pub.

For the benefit of the uninitiated. who
may desire to vary the monotony of in-
land life by sea shore amusements during
mid-summer days. the following recipe is
given for a family or a picnic clam bake:
Having first stomped out a circular bed in
clean sand. gather upon it a number of
large tint stoncsmnd upon this rude beau-tit
keep up a fire until the stones are red-hot.
Next deposit in mass of fresh sen weed
upon the hissing stones sud cover this
steaming bed with a layer of claims about
three inches thick. Then pile on more
sea weed. Now comes a layer of wasting
cars in the husk. also such other vegeta-
blesas may be desired. If chickens or
other poultry are accessible. having been
first cooked and scanned. they may be
laid directly upon the corn. Then pile on
another-load of sea weed. Upon this
spread a large layer of fish and lobsters.
Cover the entire heap liberally with sea
weed and finally with a nailcloth to con-
fluethefrazrant amuandtohastenthe
process of ltd-suing. \Vheu this oonglm
station of succulent dalntles is sufficiently
cooked. months coveringsad let every
guest. without ceremony. help himself
casting the shells behind bins and partak-

The Fourth of July celebration cum-
menced on the morning of the Fifth at
