Francis MoL‘ouloy ended the miserable
life of a confirmed drunkard in the New
Haven jail last Thursday night. He 1111,11
arrested a week before under the influ-
ence of alcohol which 11. drank in prefer-
ence to run: or whiskey, solely because it
is cheaper. In court he was ‘.sentenced to
jail for thirty days. Last Tuesday while
he was working with other prisoners in
the jail workshop, he suddenly jumped
from his bench, uttered n shriek and
rushing to the man in charge 0! the shop
excitedly asked for protection from tho
men whom he saw menacing him with
daggers and knives. He was taken to the
padded cell which iano arrangod that a
violent prisoner cannot injure himself
against. the walls. The pupil of his eye
was so dialntéd that barely any of the
white of his eye was visible. Mchuley,
who had previously refused to eat or
drink. refused to take his med cine saying
that $1,000 would not tempt him to. His
mouth was forced open, corks were in-
serted between his jaws. and he was com-
pclled to take the medicine. \Vednoaday
and Thursday he raved about men who
wanted to murder him, and refused to
either eat or drink. To quiet him. one of
the jail ofioinls walked him about the
corridor. and the sherifl' tried to induce
him to cat by sending him meals from his
jwivatatablo. All attempts to help him
