pany's building. formerly occupied by
Old “'ell Club. has been been refitted as a
public hall, and makes a very cosy and at-
tractive place for public meetings. danc-
ing parties and gatherings when not over
two hundred people are to be accommo-
dated. The main hall is about '70 feet
deep. floor smooth and waxed for danc-
ing. Well ventilated. lighted by gas and
heated be steam. Dressing rooms adjoin-

Bev. Mr. Hubbard of Dunbar-y was me-
ted with a large audience at the Baptist
Tabernacle last Sunday morning and eve-
ning. In the morning he preached a
powerful sermon from the 18th verse of
the 8th chapter of Proverbs. ”The fear of
the Lord is to hate evil. pride and arro-
ganey. and the evil way. and the forward
mouth. do I hate." In the evening he
gave a temperance discourse. from the
text—“Scflshey poured out for the men to
eat. And it came to pass as they were
eating of the pottage. that they cried out
and said. Oh! man of God. there is death
in the pot." The discourse wasa profound
and eloquent one. in which the terrible
deathly character of alcohol was portrayed
with a detail and truth that made its force
felt. showing its effect on society and the
nation.
There was a large delegation of the Re-
form association present. whom the speak-
er urged to continue their efforts to save
their fellow men from drunkenness. They
were the meal that was to be cast into the
pot and to destroy its destructive quali-
tics.
Before the services began B. F. Bailey
came in in company with \Vill. Mr. Hub-
bard. went. down and took Mr. B. I“. Bai-
ley up into the pulpit with him an had
him offer prayer. At the close of the sermon
he spoke in the highest terms of Mr. Bai-
ley and his work, and called upon our cit-
izens to give him their hearty support

It is estimated that the tobacco crop
through the t‘onnecticut Valley for 1879
will aggregate 30.000 cases. of which some
5,000 cases have been sold on the pole.
Through East Hartford and Glastonbury
the sales on the average were 2‘3a‘35 cents
for tirsts and 5 cents for seconds. On
this side of the river the sales have been
ifialti cents all around. with a few exccp~
tional lots at 17 cents. The llousatonic
crop was bought at a rush at from 15am)
cents all around. Probably niiie~teiiths of
the crop has been taken tip this way. very
much to the advantage of the produceis
Through the valley the crop has cured
well. but as usual is light in color. This.
however. is not so objectionable as it used
to be. customers not being as severe as
formerly in the matter of color. A fair
percentage of this year‘s crop has been
taken down. the warm damp weather of
last week favoring the stripping of it from

Burcliard‘s notc became due he was con-
fronted with Hill‘s note in part payment
for his claim. which he refused. Hence
the suit. But previous to this. Hill at-
tempted to collect the sum duo him from
Burcbard by a writ of attachment placed
pi the hands of Constable Seeley. of
Dorian. But finding no property to satisfy
the writ. he reported the fact to the at-
torney in the case. and also informed him
that Burchard had agreed to pay five dol-
lars per month till the amount was paid:
and did pay the constable the first install-
ment. which amount did not appear in the
credits of Hill. but it had remained in
Seeley‘s hands for two years. After at-
torneys had allowed all the oflsets asked
for. Seeley was sworn and said he had
never accounted for the five dollars. but
was ready to pay it over whenever the
rightful owner came for it. The court de-
cided in favor of the plaintiff in the sum
of five dollars damages and interest on*
the same for two years. costs being taxed
at nearly eleven dollars, in all about
seventeen dollars, for which Mr. . Hill
drew his check.
