This loss has been going on. to some ex.
tent. for yearn—fully ten or more. But
multiply the amount thus lost in one year
by say three only. and then wonder. not
that wenre so poor. but that its have on-

The great thing to be guarded against in
the future II the too great use of our pro-
ductive power, and consequent overproducv
tion and inability to consume the products.
with recurring stagnation.

The only way to attain the desired object
of giving employment to oil, mshing it
sandy and continuous. end at the same time
hearing production upon an even scale with
consumption is. to no reduce the time In
which machinery and muscle is employed.
as to compel the use of such an additional
amount of machinery as will necessitate the
employment of all our muscle and Intelli-
gence to meet the demands of consumption.
This means that the more mills and menu:
factories of every kind will be built. and
furnished. and worked by the preeeotbnim:
played. until all are employed; and that the
daily time for the employment of all work-
ing people and machinery. whether in the
factory. the mine, the machine shop. or on
the railroad. or wherever else employcd,wili
he so reduced and regulated an to prevent a
greater production than will find a ready
consumption.

Then the millions of present nonconsnm-
ere will become consumers, incmssing their
conrumptinn as their prosperity increases.
until the general consumption is developed
in an extent that at the present time would
be deemed incredible. There can be no
doubt that the increased consumption that
would be developed by our present popula-
tion. if all were employed at good living
wages. would be more than twice. probably
three times as great as at the present time;
thereby compelling a largely increased pro-
duction.with corresponding trade and frame
of every nature. with general contentment
and security. growing out of general pruev
parity.

I well know this will increase the coat of
production. and enhance the value of every-
thing; but at the same time it will give the
producer and the laborer the means to ac-
quire and consume. which they have not un-
der present conditions. Capital will no lon~
ger fend upon and consume itself. but will
reach rut into new businesses. and again
fatten upon the wages of the million

It requires no argument to prove the prlr.
ciple first the measure of a nation‘s prosper-
ity is not products at low cost.but the ability
of all to buy and consume and at remunet
alive prices. The principle is no self evident
that its mere statement is sumcient ; yet the
experience of our country within the last
twentyflve years demonstrates its corrtct
fleas.

It is also certain that the payment of bur.
dreds of millions of dollars annually to for
nine countries to produce for our consumi-
tion that which we might produce at home.

The announcement that. Rev. J. M. Taylor
would preach upon the labor question last
Sunday evening filled the Baptist Taberna-
cio to its utmost capacity. Mr. Taylor took
for his text the following psasnttes from
Hatthew and Acts: "Is it not lawful for
