Editors. Elem-l noticed in the Hour of
last Saturday a warning to people employ-
ing colored help to keep their eyes open. as
there was but little doubt that the colored
servant girls are in league with the burglars.
This is not fair. to condemn the entire class
for the misdeeds of one. The houses of
Messrs. Lockwood. Ferris, and several
others which have been robbed had no
colored servants in them. He might just as
well any that because one white man has
killed another that all white men are

a class of men in this community that have
arrayed themselves against law and order:
who have set the decision of the people
aside. as regards the sale of intoxicating
liquors. as a matter not to be thought of.
and who have banded themselves together
for the purpose of defeating the ends of
lustice.
There is also another class of men and
women amongst us. who with a feeling of
brotherly love for mankind are nobly work‘
ing for the extinction of an evil from our
midst. an evil the victims of whose ravages
during the past year in the United States
alone number sixty thousand persons
flow terrible to contemplate. Sixty thou.
sand lives wrecked. Sixty thousand pre-
mature grztves filled. Sixty thousand souls
gone down to destruction.
These noble men and women are working
for the suppression and punishment of this
lawlessness almost unaided by the officers
whose duty it is to cuforcu the law and who

influence which a poor. weak infant will
exert in the family and the home in which

strongest man. In the eastern lands the
custom was to only care for the healthy
maielnfants;«fer the sickly ones. and the
females were considered of no good to the
state. as they could not become soldiers. nor
perform any of the particular duties which
peculiarly belong to the main portion of
every land. And so these useless ones—
thcee incumbents of the slate—were either
placed in the arms of their Moloch. or
thrown to the crocodiles in the rivers. But
with the advent of Christianity was taught
all the good was ever contained in these
ancient customs. and added. besides. that
we should care especially for the weaker
ones of society. And so. the baby is the
object of the family's attention simply be-
cause it is the weakest. All the love. affec-
tion and tenderness centers upon the little
being whose life has been consigned to our
keeping. You can reach a parent‘s heart by
means of the child quicker than by any
other. and the " baby at home“ is often the
means of saving a man from sin. Mr.
Simouson referred to a child‘s faith. and said
that although men and women sometimes
doubted, a child never did. A child may
bring trouble and care tnto a famtly. but.
he thought. it was but one of the methods
which God adopts to make no patient and
prepare us for our future state. And even
if the baby sometimes wearins us, still we
would not willingly part with it. We.
would not willingly lose the little one who
so often puts its elbows on our knees. and
with its chubby face upturned to ours, tells
to us its tale of toy or woe. His portraits
of cbtld-llfe were humorous and pathetic.
