war that the two opposing armies give dif~
fcrcnt names to the same battle. And there
is a greater confusion of nomenclaturc cun—
mrum: this turtle than any other. The
engagement at Blackburn's Ford, on July
lith. is Called by the southern people the
Battle of Bull Run; and they call the en—
zttzemvnt of July Slat. the first battle of
Marianas, and the battle between Lee and
POW. 00 the sum? ground, two years nfter~
ward, the second. battle of “commas. The.
northern people, on the other hand. call the
battle of July ‘21. the Battle of Bill Run.
and the other battle on the ground the arc.

feas that the northern name for the battle
of July 21. at lent. ia more crucible than
the muthrrn name. For not only is the
battlefizld much nearer to Bull Run than to

At one moment we were wanted near a cer-
tain tree. then we must move squatter of a
mile further and take pcaaitiuu under a hill
then we must hide in : clump of tree: still
further on, and then something else. This
went on for hours. as other ttcopa gradual—
ly joined us. and similar aggregations began
to appear at other points. and the firing
gradually grew more distinct. Atlaat we
were all drawn up at. the foot of a long.
high bill. which we understood waa the
only thing detweeu usund the deadly cun-
dict.
But because I was then in the dark as to

I knew a gentleman who was in that very
regiment. and who gave me an amusing ac—
count of the effect of my fire on them. I
am happy to state that he reported no one
hurt. But one man. be said. had the pistol
in his belt struck by u shrapnel. and, ml:—
taking thejerk on his stomach for a mortal
wound in the bowels. thrcw'up his hand:
and exclaimed with considerable dramatic
rtblllty. “ I‘m dead!" It theac lines meet the
eye of any other person concerned in this
remarkable charge, I abculd be most happy
to correspond with him.
Thc next tbingI remember about this
battle was seeing a large body of Uni-m in-
funtry. us much a: a division. I :upposc.
drawn up in n mlid square and double-
quirkiug across Dugan‘a farm. at a distance
of about threequurters of a mile. They
were in the northern quarter of the battle»
tit-id, and seemed to have left the Sudley
rmd a half mile beyond the Mathews houac
from me. and in be hastening away to the
southwest, leaving the Matthew: house cu~
tltcly to their left. It was a grout mystery
to me to sun them traveling in that direc-
tion. but I sent a solid shot after them an a
sort of note of inquiry, and was :lll further
puzzled to see them stop stock mill in an In-
slum. and in an instant more strike a dou—
hlwqulck again and pan: out of view. To
suppose that my solid :bnt hurt any of them
Would be tbn high: of folly. I do not. eup-
poae. that I could have struck a barn at the
distance of fifty yards. It may be that the
report of my gun from an unexpected quur‘

anybody can tell me wbut troops these were
where they were going to. and what. made

thut the cannon ball discharged from my
pit-cc entered the ground ten or fifteen yards
artillery on our bill. The cone were loaded.
and the landyard: in band. when the Sixth
North Carolina regiment :woopcd down on
the battery and captured it. It is morally
certain that if the North Curollnlan: had
been a moment later these reminiscences
would never have been written.
To return to the retreat. it was not a very
protracted one. After going a quarter of :
who we had reached the bottom of the hill.
and gone a short. distance up the next hill.
There we halted. Not a hundred troops

A few minutes after this halt. on order
was given by some officers that my gun
should be taken to the top of n neighboring
hill. near a country mansion ctllcd the
Robinson House. And there occumfd one
of the most thrilling episodes of the day.
When we had reached the topof Robinson‘s
hlll. we had a line view of tho .Warrentcn
turnpike. at u distance of about a mile.
which. to our surprise. was perfectly black
with Union troops. who wore in a double-
qulck toward Alexandria. There was no
appearance of a route about it. but, on the
other hand. the movement uppcurcd strictly
soldtcrly. Wu were ordered to fire at them.
I immediately sent. a :olld shot after them
of which they took no notice. 1 sum an-
other. und they halted instantly. In a Inn—
lucnt more they had taken it buttcrv out of
the pike up the side of the hill beyond. at n
plucu where is a residence. with a double
row of poplar trees from the house to the
pike. In another instant we suit a putfuf
wlutc smoke from under the trees. and a
parrot shell wont screaming over our bonds.
A! that time our second lieutenant named
Macon. was on his home galloping around
my gun and waving his sword in the air.
The next shell that came from the turnpikc
