A Richmond dispatch states that nearly

for Blaine as a candidate for the presidency,

It was settled in the Legislature of Ken~
tucky yesterday that Hr. James 13. Beck is
to be the Senator of that State in the place
of Mr. Stevenson. His term of service will
begin on March 4. 1877. Mr. Beck is an

The New York Irish World prefers Blaine
to Grant. It says Grant is supposed to be a
Methodist and a follower of Wesley.

The Committee adjourned to meet on Sat-
urday. Feb. 5th at the slime place.
Mr. David Dudley Field took occasion (in-
ring his argument in the Tweed trial Mon-
day to pay his respects to. the Tribune
which had expressed some curiosity con-
coming the source from which the eminent
gentleman derives hrs fees. Ilr. Field said
he would relieve the Tribune's anxiety on
one condition. and that is that “ it shall .tell
me for what purpose one of its editors call-
ed on Tweed when he came from Black-
well‘s Island; and. further. tell me whether
that paper is not supported by the bounty
or indulgence of that gentleman whom it
forysara charged most grossly. and as I
trust. falsely, with having robbed a public
corporation of rest sums of money. Now
hers is afair ofler. If they fully .‘answer
me these questions I will answer them. and
will Se‘elr) prepared to give them at the
same time information which my associate
counsel have in their posesslon." The Tri-
bune defies the allegator but does not deny
the allegation. It informs Hr. Field that
he is engaged in an immoral business. it
talks about “malicious and disgraced ont-
casts" who do various reprehensible things
but it does not venture to accept Mr. Field‘s
fair ofl'er
The Methodist preacher-a of the city of
New York have expressed themselves quite
pointedly in regard to the controversy about
the Bible in the public schools. The com-
mittee of Ministers who had the subject un-
der consideration comprised many of the
ableat and most active clergymen of the
vicinity. Three several matters pertaining
to the public schools of that State and citv
have been referred on three different occa-
sions to committees for careful investigation.
The first was the "Gray Nuns " act; the
second. the Randal‘a Island School distribu-
tion; and the third. the Ramaniah proposi-
tion to place the Papal parochial schools on
certain conditions under the care of the
Civic Board of Education. The committee
claim that the laws discriminate in favor of
Catholic institutions. The political attitude
of Catholicism is deprecated by the commit-
tee and President Grant's views lndorsed.
Amendments to the national and state cou-
atitutions are recommended. In 1375 the
legislature passed an act amending an act to
incorporate the sisterhood of Gray Nuns in
the state of New York. The set provides
that any person who shall have. or may
hereafter he graduated at any seminary of
learning of said corporation located within
this state, may file such diploma, or a dupli-
catethereof. in the department of public in-
struction. and the superintendent of public
instruction may issue a certificate to the ef-
fect that such graduate is a qualified teacher
of the common school of that state. Against
this act the Methodist ministers entered a
unanimous and emphatic protEst as a law:
invidious in its discriminations. unconstitu-
tional in its spirit and mischievous in its
probable operations. and have aupoiuted 'a
committee to respectfully request its repeaN
by the legislature in the session of 1870.
With an ascertained average attendance of
100.000 pupils in the public schools. it is es-
tlmated that there is still ample accommo-
dation in them for the 80.000 pupils who rc-
putedly attend the Romlsh parochial schools.
The persistent eflorts of the priests have
greatly depleted s and schools. now not
more than half full, to till the sectarian edi-
fices erected in close proximity to them.
