over the bed clothes or over his body and
limbs. replies to imaginary questions. hears
noises of animals or men approaching. is apt
to think some one abusing or poking fun at
him. the scene constantly varying all of
which to him for the time has real existence.
Now what mean these manifestations.
simply a complete perversion of functional
power of the Brain and of its Nutritive op-
erations produced not merely by the contact
of Alcohol with its substance but from its
toxical effect upon this organ. and when
once having been affected is far more sensi-
tive to its influence and liable to suffer again.
The question is often mooted as to wheth-
er an immediate attack of Delirium Tre—
mens is no to exhaustion of nervous power
from pro god stimulation, or to the with-
holding of accustomed stimulus. both of
which are in a sense correct. for whilst it
occurs more frequently from the stimulus
being withheld, it is obviously none theieas
due to previous exhaustion of Nervous pow-
er.
Insanity is frequently traced to lntemper-
once. and there can be no dimculty in under.
standing how the disordered condition of
the Cerebral organs. produced by intoxicat-
ing liquors may result in such physicil.
chemical and thereby vital changes in the
Brain. as not only to be of itself a cause of
Insanity. but also render such persons far
more liable to he made insane by other
agents. which in a healthy condition would
produce no cfl‘cct. The relative proportion
of cases of Insanity arising from this cause
may vary according to the character and lo-
cation of the population upon which the
calculation is based. Of the 19.00? Insane
patients in the Asylums of [England and
Walr-s.1,799. nearly fifteen per cent. were at‘
tributed to intempersnce as a cause.
In ordinary forms of Insanity we look to
a decided hereditary predispositioh. also in
Gouty and Scrofulous constitutions in which
there is established in the parent perverted
or imperfect N utiltlve functions. to a liabil-
ity to manifest themselves in the offspring.
so also it is not unreasonable to look for
and expect to find the offspring of the hub

habits of drinking.
That the habitual drunkard injures and
enfceblea his own Nervous System there can
be no doubt. and that there is a liability of
entailing upon his family a like mental con-
dition is proved both by theory and obser-
vation, nor does this mental deterioration
and here. as shown by a report made by Dr.
llowe to the legislature of Mass. on the sub-
ject of Idiocy. in which he says “the habits
of the parents of three hundred idiots were
learned of which one hundred and forty-five.
nearly one half. are known to be habitual
drunkards." and still further there is no
doubt. indeed there is the best of reasons in
support of the declaration that internperauCu
not only aggravated and renders more viru-
lent and destructive to the constitution any
latent taint of whatever characters in the
individual. and that the fountains of health
for succeeding generations may be thereby
vitiated or impaired.
Inflammation of the Brain and its mem-

Capt. Samuel Bocrum has just lengthened
his sloop Active about eight feet on the
stern. besides other improvements that are
calculated to make her more active. The
improvements have all been done by his
own labor rind ingenuity.
Mr. T. B. may now be considered the
champion oarsman of Five Mile River. as
no one in this town has confidence enough
in his ability to row him a mile race. One
has signified his willingness to row a quar-
ter of a mile. but that is considered child's
play.
Mr. Charles L. Raymond's son. Jacob,
has leased the coal yard of this place and
will soon have a stock of the best assorted
coal at popular prices. Give him a call all
you that have money. and it will be to your
advantage as well as his.
