The Fairfield Co. Fire Insurance Company
have declared a semi-annual dividend of 5
per cent.
Saturday. The Island is a small one at the
mouth of the harbor. and is owned by them
and occupied by "(‘-apt. Joseph Merrill and
family. Early in the morning. those who
had the preparation of the chowder, etc.. in
charge. went down and began to get things
in readiness for the feast. The others fol-
lowed during the foreman. and about one
o‘clock the chowder was ready. clams roast-
ed. and tables spread. and the party sat
down to a repeat of unsurpassed eacelience.
After dinner was over. those who had boats
participated in a race for prises of cakes.
awarded by Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Merrill.
and pineapples by Bell d5 Hilsdon. The
winning boats were asfolIOWs: first prise.
first class boats. Joseph Vroom; Second.
Geo. Burbank; Second class boats. first
prize was won by Joseph Merrill. The
party returned to the city about five o'clock,
highly pleased with the day‘s amusement.

Opera House.
The new Opera House is progressing rap-
idly toward completion. The scene paint-
ers. carpenters and painters are transforming
the interior into one of the finest. if not
the finest hall in the state. he capacity. lo-
cation and many attractive points will no
doubt be the means of bringing‘many first
class entertainments to our city. Tuesday
last the scenic artist. Mr. J. A. Calyo. of
New York. and the stage machinist. Mr. J.
L. Couch. of Bridgeport. completed their
labors, and yesterday exhibited the scenery
and its workings to the proprietors. Mr.
Calyo has painted seven or eight regular set
scenes. and a magnificent drop curtain.
This curtain rolls up and down with remark:
able smoothness an‘d quietness. and so aasilv
that a child can manage it. The painting on
