Menbsdcn or Mossbunkcr llsbcrics of GM-
dmcr‘s snd Peconlc Bays have recently been
compiled by Mr. Benjamin H. Slalom In-
spector of Customs. st Grccuport. Long Is-
lsndat the request of Mr. Spencer 1“. Baird.
Commissioner of Fish sud Fishvrlos for thc
United States. From it. is learned that the
number of fish taken in these two buys in
1878. was about 00.000.000: by porch-nets.
50000'000. and shore-wines. and other nets.
“1.000.000. The purse—nuts are from 900 to
1.000 feet long and 100 feet deep; the gill.
nets are 00 to 500 feet long and 10 feat deep.
and the sbnrcselncs nrc one-half to three-
fourths of ll mile long by 20 to 30 feet deep.
