day of last Week. On account of feeble
health and good conduct he had been al-
lowed some liberty in the yard, was appoint-
ed ball assistant but took advantage of the
privilege and walked ofl'. Previous to do-
ing so, he stole a quantlty of brass from the
prison. sold it at a junk shop near by, realiz-
ing $1.20. With this money, all be had in
the world, he made 011' and is suppomd to
have gone towards New York. Intelligence
relative to the facts has been telegraphed to
tho various police headquarters in the state
and at New York, and very likely he will
be apprehended and again shut up.
—Mr. William Porter, the gentleman who
has performed so many good works in the
way of laying concrete walks up—town, has
recently completed a contract for Main street,
front of the Opera House, this city. Those
who have witnessed the processes adopted
by Mr. Porter, and have taken note of the
materials used, cannot but concur in the
general opinion that he knows his business.
The walk in question is made of cobble
stones three or four inches in depth, coated
with coal tar, and rolled down with a heavy
stone roller. A coating of sand and gravel,
saturated with coal tar is applied at the top,
the whole thoroughly rolled down. The air
and sun’s rays tend, in a short time to make
this solid, and as impervious to weather as
stone. The Opera House looks 100 percent.
better since the addition, and we hope. at no
distant day, that Main street on both sides
below the railroad, may be laid with this
kind of pavement.
—-Thc “ Epizootic" or horse disease, seems
to be spreading in this city and vicinity.
Fully one-half the horses owned about here
are touched with it. Fifteen horses belong~
ing to the Horse Railway Company were
more or less afibclod, and to such an extent,
that on Monday many of the regular trips
were omitted; indeed, trips were only made
to the regular trains. A fact in this connec-
tion worthy of comment, was the speed with
which the omission of trips was noted, and
how soon people began to complain of the
absence of “accommodation." It a; evi-
dent from this that Norwalk cannot do with-
out its Home Railway. Two of the regular
hack drivers‘ say their horses have been con-
plsining for some time, and only by the
care were able to work out their
daily tasks. One can scarcely meet a horse
that has not symptoms, such as lethargy,
drooping and running at the nose, painful
in some instances to witm. We are glad
to learn that unusual care and attention is
being beatowéd by experts, and that very
soon a favorable turn in the disease may he
looked for.
