A man and his wife from some northern
town came to this city, on Monday, by the
Danbury train. They went. to the steam-
boat wharf, intending to take passage for

Point, on “Wednesday, Aug. 28th. Sanford
Sho‘les will do the honors in a style which
may be imitated, but cannot be excelled. A
cordial invitation is extended to each heavy
man in city, town. State, or country to par-
ticipate. It is proposed to make this a big»
get bake than history ever recorded. The
Point will accommodate five thousand heavy
weights at once, and we know Sholes can
roast for an army much larger. Turn out

A novel way of clearing dogs from the
streets of Lynchburg, Va., is reported. The
police stretch a huge seine across the street
and run up and dawn with it. They have
been known to catch hundreds at one haul.
With a seine made to order, a double pur»
pose might be answered in the streets of our ‘
own city, viz.: the extermination of dogs,
mosquitos and files. It would be u singular
sight to behold Washington or Main streets
thus swept, under direction of Chief
Hodges. The catch might be tine and re
salt in some out catching into the bargain.

More Scared than Hurt.
On Monday, a son of conductor Benc-
dict, aged eight years, was sculling a boat;
several little girls were with him, and it was
at a point just below Washington bridge.
Like every boy bent on having a good time,
he felt enthusiastic, and to show his skill
with the car, put in an extra flourish oi'

evening sermon was on “ The Broken—down
Men of the Bible." The funeral sermon of
one of the Sunday School scholars was
preached in the church at 35 P. M. to a large
audience.

the Congregational Church last Sunday cvc-

timents expressed in it are worthy to be in-
