zens on tip-toe, and,. at 1.1 o‘clock, the hour
for their arrival, a crowd had assembled
about the depot. and 1110113 the streets where
it was probable they would pass At 11:30,
the train came steaming up,nnd a moment
later companies E and G, .of the New
York Seventyrfirst Regiment, Captains
Webber and Turner, ammpanied by the
regimental drum corps, twelve drums,
and regimentnl. bend, twenty-two: pieces,
stepped upon the platform. The Burnside
Guards, in their elegant outfit, were near
and gave them a formal reception. Imme-
diately after a procession was formed con-
sisling of the Burnsidc'Gunrds, Capt. James
C. Crowe, and Company B., of the Weston
Military and Boarding School, forty cadets,
under command of Capt. T. F. Rowland.
The procession formed on Washington
street in front of Mayor Ely‘s, the street
on both sides being lined with citizens.
Demonstrations of welcome were mani-
fested on every hand. An immense Ameri-
cam flag, inscribed in huge letters,“ Wel-
come Friends," was suspended across Main
street from )lilitnryto Good Templar’s
Hall, and the stars and stripes were flung
to the brown in many places about the city.
After marching through the principal streets
the men were dismissed, and occupied their
time during the afternoon as they chose.
At 2 o'clock, Mr. A. S. Jarvis, principal of
the ‘Ncstou Boarding School, took the boys
to Gregory‘s Point for a clam bake. A num-

ances could not have been more highly
satisfactory. Capt. Crown and his efficient
officers, Wheeler and Brown, must have
given attention to the minutcst details of
tactics, to reach the result exhibited. ()ur
city may Well be proud of its military or-
ganization. Of the Seventy-first, they are
veterans, and have reached the ncme of
pc1fcctio11 by experience in other fields.
Their record is n glorious one, achieved
through many a bloody struggle. Years
have passed since, but they seem to have
forgotten none of the things then acquired.
The exemplary picture they gave us on
Monday evening will never be forgotten.

Council, Gen. Crawford, and invited guests
reviewed the companies, marching to music
by the band. Directly after, the procession
was reformed, marched to the city and
were dismissed. At 8:30 o‘clock a grand
bouquet, gottcu' up in magnificent and
liberal style by Mr. Tucker, of the Depot
Snloon. was partaken of at Military Hall,
participated in, it seemed to us ,by one thou-
sand persons. Five immense tables had been
erected, and upon them were heaped good
things sufficient to make them groan, but
suflced to render the guests very huppy.
At the head of the table of honor, near
which loomed up the, form ofGen. Craw-
ford, was placed an I immense boqnet of
flowers made by. the Messrs. J. H. & S. H
Smith and presented by the former. Among
the distinguished persons present, were Col
Allen, of Providence, R. I., formerly of the
Seventeenth Connecticut, 001 Austin, of the
Forty-seventh Brooklyn, Col. McClure, of
the Fourteenth Brooklyn, Veteran John I.
