Few persons who have not given special
attention to the subject are aware of the im-
portance which Sunday Schools are assum-
ing in the churches of the country. At the
late S. S. Convention, held at New London,
the number of schools of all denominations
in this state was reported to hem; teachers
14,455; scholars 111,118; under-sixteenyeara
of age 73.617. In hirfield County the num-
ber of schools is 178; teachers 3.727; schol-
ars 19,465. A gratifying feature in these
statistics is that so large a number 37,501,
about one‘third of the whole number are
over sixteen years of age; showing that the
Snndav School is becoming more and more
a church school for _adults as well as chil-
dren.
We observe that some of our secular or
changes give a column weekly to the expdsi-
tion of the “ Uniform Lessons“ One of our
city pastors stated in an address on “the
study of the Bible“ last Sunday evening. that
accurate reports gave the number in the
Sunday Schools of the country now study-
ing these “ Uniform Lessons" as about two
millions.
The XntionaJ bonds} School Convention
was held at Indianapolis last week, attended
by representatives from all parts of the
country.

young ladies and gentlemen of the High
School of that city. Addresses were made

However necessary it may be for party
purposes, it certainly furnishes an effectual

melodies and ha’ser interests of their fel-
lows. Ifthe osmosis newssuyitmustbe
classed among necessary evils.
The influences that operate in such parti-
zan gatherings can hardly be expected to
conduoetn the good of the community at
large. Skill in that disingenuous art. val-lousy
ly designated as wirepullingpipe-laying and
log-rolling amounts to much more in a can-
cus than integrity of character and purity of
motive. and the remedy seems as far-distant
as the millenium. How far the caucus which
is to select our next Senator will prove su-
perior to the usual influences brought to
bear on such wnclaves, remains to be seen.

fullest extent is already apparent, yet we
have faith to believe that. made up as it will
be from the chosen Legislators of our state
and called for the high purpose of designs-
ting a Senator of the United States. its mem-
bers will not allow themselves to be played
upon. at will. by dextemus politicians. and
will see something more in the work before
them than an opportunity to serve party and
reward a political worker. We have the
more faith in this respect because their pron
or course is an plainly before them in the re—
turn of the present incumbent for a second
term. The ability, integrity and statesman-
sbip which Senator Ferry has shown at
Washington have commanded for him a
measure of respect and influence which no
new man in his place could hope to obtain
soon, if at all. The state cannot afl'ord to
throw away these advantages in its repre-
sentation at the national capitol; it needs
there the statesman more than the politician,
There are spoils of office more remunerative
to the holder and less damaging to the peo‘
ple if improperly bestowed. Let the party
workers be content with these. without de-
manding that the high ofiloe of a Senator of
the United States be degraded into a fee for
partisan services. Let us hold this ofllcc at
least as a trust to be used for the best into-r-
ESL! of the nation.

Town fleeting.
Another special meeting of the electors of
Norwalk is called to meet at the Town
House next Saturday afternoon. At the last
meeting it was voted by a large majority to
build a bridge over Mill Creek. East Nor-
walk, and $2,500 was appropriated for that
puipose. The meeting is called next. Satur-
day to see if the town will rescind the vote
making the appropriation. As it is a matter
of importance to a large number of our citi-
zens, the building. no doubt, will be fully at-
tended. We hope the project will not be
defeated.
