A Heart-Bending Story.
On Monday night, October 2nd, the pleas-
ure yacht Jennie Lee was blamed 05' Mon-
muk Point. She was a handsome vessel
of about forty tons burden, schooner rigged,
and sumptuously equipped. There were ac-
commodations for screw of four, and twelve
passengers. Last spring she was purchased
'by Mr. 0. B. Jerrolds, a wealthy land own-

‘the season at various watering places—West
Point, Lake Mahopac, Saratoga and Sharon
Springs, the party, consisting of Mr. and
Mrs. Jerrolds and their three children, Ar-
thur. agcd nine; Julia, aged seven, and Jen-
nie. aged four years; Anna McGovern
(servant), and three seamen, Hank Buttla,
William Guinlnn and Joseph Reynolds, em-
barked at New York for Boston. The later
summer days was passed in visiting various
charming villages along the Connecticut
coast,“ fancy dictated. Theyleft Fair He-

to make their way leisurely toward Boston
and then return to their far—western home.
The night was cold, but. the brilliant stars
and lovely moon rendered the deck very at~
tmctivc, and the hour was late before the
party retired. Bullies was at the wheel and
Gulnlun on deck; all the others were asleep
below. Shortlv after midnight Mr. Jerrolds
had occasion to go on deck. Springing out
of his berth, somewhat confused with sleep,
he was going toward the stairs when a sud-
den lurch of the vessel, caused by abrupt
tacking, pitched him against the center-table.
As he fell, his outstretched hands clinched
the lamp chains which were hanging from
the ceiling. The chains snapped asunder,
and the lamp, filled with kerosene oil, was
dashed to the floor. Instantanetntsb' it ex-
ploded, and the terrible liquid was at once
scattered—blazing fiercely all over the cab'
in. It was the work of a moment for Jer-
rolds to regain his foot and shout “fircf”

smoke staggered with them in the deck.

on the oppoaitc side beyond the flames,
which had gained such headway as to make
an impassable barrier. A light; partition
divided the cabin from the store-room, ap-
proacln-d from the forcastlc. Axes were
seized, and the agonized father strove to
cut through to rescue his babe. The smoke
was so thick that he was stifled and car-
ried out in an inscusiblc condition. There
was no hop..- now but to the life-boat. Mrs.
Jerrolds became frantic, and would have
leaped into the flames to save or die with
her child, and was held back by main force.
The boat but] been lowered, and the survi-
vors placed in it. Mr. J errolds was almost
helpless, Mrs. Jerrolds bad fainted, and the
two children were shresking wildly with
terror. With dweulty the semen kept
them in the boat, and pulled for the Long
Island shore, three miles or more distant.
The vessel now was enveloped in the
fiery element. The flames roared and crack-
led, towering like a pyramid above the
masts, and sending out over the waves a
horrible glare when the cask of kerosene in
the forward bold exploded, shooting up a
white sheet of flame far into the air, and
scattcring sparks over the water. The blaze
continued until the doomed cmft was
burned to the water‘s edge, and after a
while glow‘cring with cindets, sunk in deep
water. The survivors, after a weary effort,
made land about nine miles from Montauk
Point, the tide carrying them down. They
went to a farm house and received hospit-
able treatment from the inmates, Mr. James
Tcrhunc‘s family. On \‘Vednesday Mrs.
Jerrolds was able to be removed. and the
party went on to Brooklyn, where they have
friends. Next evening they went on to Phil-
adelphia. Mr. Jerrolds endeavored to ob-
tain traces of the sunken vessel. with the
intention of making efforts, by divers, to
recover the bodies, but the task seems hope—
less. He offers a reward for each body. de-
livcred at any place. His address is cf. the

fortunate victims were undoubtedlv suflo-
catcd, as no sound of their volom was heard.
Mr. Jerrolds and Quinlan both were scorch-
ed by the flames, which they describe 13'
being very fierce and the beat terribly in-
tense.
