secular education is not. all the inmatcs of
this Homt- rem-ive; their moral and spiritual
condition is. also cared for. ()11 the Sabbath
and during the week the children attend the
church of Rev. James (‘ttlcmam Darit'u, and
in addition receive religious instruction from
the accomplished matron. By these Invans
the children are thoroughly developed, and
principles of true manhood and womanhood
are instilled into the mind. Then as soon as
they arrive at a suitable age situations adapt-
ed for them are sought for, and they are
sent off to takc their places in the world, and
to practice the principles of industry and 11p-
rightness, which they acquire at the institu-
tion. In this way Fitch's Home becomes a
public benefactor.
Now it will be evident that an institution
of this kind mnnot be carried on without
great expense. And yet we are surprised to
hear that this has never exceeded more than
$5,000 per annum. How forty-live children
can be clothed, fed, and educated the whole
year round for this sum, we cannot tell. But
one thing isocrtain, there must be rigid econ-
omy amino waste. In answer to our ques-
tion as to how the Home was supported, we
were told, it. has a permanent fund of $14,-
000; it receives aid from the State Legisla-
ture, according to the number of its inmates,
from the State, (this amounts now to $231 a
year); “the town of Statitford gives $2 per
week for all the children it sends to the in-
stitution Dorian gives 31 pct week for its
