rather the hole where one once ox-
ieted. and has also a slot for a pow-
der train or fuse. This type of or-
tillcry came into being toward the
close of the Civil war. its carriage
originally had four wheels. two of
which have disappeared with time.
while the woodwork on tho other
two is better preserved than that of
the French cannon on the green in
Norwaik despite ago.
Mr. Britten can not recall the
home of the man from whom he
purchased it. and never did learn its
history. So it stands tn the shodow
of tho railroad bed subject to the
flashing scrutiny of thousands that
ride the lines. a. mystery a. every-
body. its mouth may have spoken
ytars ago. but will never speak
seam and so the mystery will re-
tnain one.

of the company salesmen. who but

Among the improvements that
might be agitated tor East Norwallt
are heat and light at the up station
of the New York. New Haven and
Hartford railroad and a traffic
standard at the foot of Winfield
street. The latter is becoming in-
cl'eusingly important because of the
numerous hairbreodth escapes of
motorists driving from Winfield
street into Gregory boulevard, hug-
ging the corner.
A couple of weeks ago two cars
did have a bad smash there and tho
standard would be justified if it re-
sulted in preventing only one more.
Under present conditions the adxlce
“keep to the right" is totally disre-
garded at the point.
