policy of the founder has prevailed
through the years—"selling to the
consumer the highest standard of
foods at the lowest possible prices."
1t is interesting to note that since
the initial store, each one has been
painted a bright red. the color chos-
cn by the founder to distinguish it
from other grocery stores. These
stores are often referred to as the
"little red school house of American
retailing": the little red school
house. being the pioneer in our
country's system of education. and
the A. d; P. stores the pioneer of
chain grocery stores.
Aside from 40 large food depots
advantageously located throughout
the country. which supply the thou-
sands of these stores, this company
operates its own coffee roosters.
bakeries, salmon canneries in Alas-
ka. and other kindred manufactur-
ing plarfts. A purchasing cities in
San Francisco handles all the Cali-
fornia. fruit and Pacific Coast prod-
ucts. Five coffee buying offices are
located in South America. Another
purchasing office in London buys
the imported delicacies that Conti-
nental Europe provides. Most every
known Popular brand of groceries is
low by these stores. and since the
founding of the business nothing has
been sold on credit.
