Town Meeting

$175,000 Loan
The incoming board of selectmen
were authorized to borrow on the
note of the town the sum of $175.-
000 to meet the general expenses of
the town, pending the collection of
taxes, at the annual town meeting
last evening in the Boyle school.
Less than to voters had taken
their places in the auditorium when
Dr. Barry D. Henson called the
meeting to order. Tax Collector
Louis Jefferson read the call. (31°1-
lowing which Simon W. Co r
moved to accept the reports of the
several town ofllcers the first item on
the call. The move was seconded
and carried unanimously.
The town voters authorized the
board of sclectmen to borrow on
the note or notes of the town the
sum of 8175. 000. The appropria-
tion is to meet the town expenses
brior to the collection of taxes. the
amount to be repaid within the pres-
ent fiscal year.
Dr. Hanson called the attention
of the voters to the third item on
the call. the annual budget as sub-
mitted to and approved by the fi-
nance hoard. Suggestion that the
budget be considered with separate
action on the report of each depart-
ment met with no support. so it was
moved, seconded, and carried to
adopt the budget as a whole.
The recommendation of the li-

port Police department was struck
by an automobile late yesterday
morning. The youngster was not
seriously hurt.

the supply of asphalt gave out. but

immediately and by tonight the en-
tire road. from North Main street to
the Fairficld town line, will be ready
for traffic.
The sclectmen drove over the new
road from one end to the other yes-
terday and were satisfied with the
progress made on the project. The

Columbus Day was celebrated in
a fitting fashion yesterday and ms...
ning by the members of the Principe
Lodge. Sons of Italy. Snugatuck. The
day's exercises opened at 9:30 with
a parade in which hundreds took
part. After traversing the Saugatuck
section. the parade marched to
Westport and covered the center of
the town.
The parade formation was led by
Policeman Iiounrd Baker on a mo-
torcycle. while behind him marched
the band. and members of the com-
mittee and officers of the lodge. The
marching Jnemhers of the lodge all
carried small flags. In the evening.
the Italians assembled at the Sons
of Italy hall on Riverside avenue
where dancing was enjoyed.

Post Office. Westport Bank and
Trust company enjoyed a holiday
ytstcrday in observance of Colum-
bus Day. while the teachers and
pupils in the public schools also en-
ched a day of leisure. Flags plac-
ed around the town increased the
holiday aspect.
About 70 members of tho Plon-
eer Hook and Ladder company. and
friends gathered at the Old Mill
Sunday for the company's annual
clambake. Although the day was
unpleasant because of the cold and
rain. all present enjoyed a fine din-
ner. The bake was put up by Cap.
tain Burr Nash and proved to be as
good as predicted.
An old fashioned Eallowe' 'en party
will take place at the Westpert
Country club. Saturday evening. 0c-
