The scientists who have studied
the “facts on white rats and other
lower animals of diets detlcient in
various food factors have repeatedly
observed that those whose dle‘. con-
tains too small on amount of Vita-
min A—the tat" soluble vitamin prea~
ent in butter and cod-liver oil—are
likely to develop infections of the
nose and throat. accompanied by
snuffles. nasal discharge, loss of ap-
petite and failure to gain in weight.
If the diet continues to be de-
ficient in this factor the animal dies
When the body is examined after
death the secretions are feund to be
free of infectious material‘such as is
found also in human beings with in-
fections of the nose and throat.

Dr. Amy L. Daniela of the Uni-
versity of lowa told the American
Academy of Ophthalmology and
Otoiaryngology at its recent meeting
in Colorado Springs that the regular
feeding of Vitamin A to these ani-
mals undertaken immediately after

amount taken by various families in

She found that most people oin-
sume insufllcient amounts of Vita-
min A and she is inclined to relate
that deficiency in the diet to the low
resibtanco of the individualvto the
common cold.
