Road Maintenance
At the start or the Decal year road
conditions were such as to demand a
heavy reconstruction program prec-
,‘ ticaily throughout the entire city.
During the fall. therefore. many
roads were re-graVelled and a num-
ber were acarified. scraped and roll-

i ‘tinued well into the winter. Dur-
ing. tlU winter. particqu attention
wee given to sending slippery hills
and cleaning and sanding cross
walks. Alter the hut fairly heavy
snowstorm in January. the main
streets were cleaned by snow plows
and snow removed from the busi-
ness centers. After the heavy hila-
- cards in February, somewhat more

plowed out by snow plows mounted
on trucks or tractors and anew re-

possible to abate the dust nuisance
on a considerable number of streets

man Mills brought to the attention

Oil Co. had a large quantity ot oil
mixed with sediment which they
wished to dispose of and that it
might be possible to use when the
the city streets tor laying dust. Con-
ferences were held with Mr. Ella-
worth C. Lockwood and C. S. Mea-
chaJ o! The Standard-Oil 00.. who
arranged to donate and spread the
oil over the City streets gratis. A
total of ".800 gallons of this light
oil was used. representing a saving

of almost 810.000 to the City. on the *
heels of the current price at 11 cents
per gallon of oil applied. This serv-

nuisance had become very trouble-

The demand for good roads to
accommodate modcrn mito traffic
has been so great that a-numhcr
of persons have suggested the ml-
visabillty of having a bond issue
either for permanent paving alone
or for both permanent paving and
general road reconstruction through-
out the city. Such a procedure
would unquestionably be desirable.
but the contention cannot be sot
