The latest complaint about road
conditions is registered by a resident
of Fairfield avenue. who states that
a bad strotch_of the road‘at,the
foot of the avenue was put under
repair recently and then ‘work was
stopped for_some reason. The re~
suit was the leaving of only space
for one car to pass the point. ‘ Five
different streets intersect at the point
and‘ the incngncnienco felt by motor-
ists is considerable.

The street department has a crew
of men at work raising the level of
the sidewalk at the Swedish Con-
gregational church by laying on it
another layer of crushed stone and
cement. The walk has been lower
than those later laid on both sides
of the stretch and was so laid
through error of the department
concerning the proper level. The
department is making the repairs.

boast of a championship baseball
team within the next week. The

Springw cod-Nationals on September
4 to determine which has the right
to wear the city laurels.
September 24 has been fixed as
the final date for sidewalk repairs
on Van Zant street. Fifth street and
East avenue. After that date the
city will undertake the pavement
and either bill the property owners~
or fix a lien on their property to
cover the amount.

by altering one detail. in running a
clapboard covering from the top of

At the request of E. '1‘. Bedford.
the committee of the Woetport Park
and Athletic field has decided to
construct a more substantial club-
house than at first planned. The
new house will have ample accom-
modations for boys and girls. Mr.
Bedford has agreed to pay any ex-
tra cost should there be any. in
erecting a better clubhouse. The
members of the committee do not
think that the now clubhouse will
bring the total cost beyond the lim-
it of 326.500 as provided at the re-
recent town meeting. According to
the newly made plans. the club-
house will have ten lockers for girls
and 20 for boys.
A meeting of the committee was
held Wednesday at tile Town Hall.
when the contract for the construc-
tion of a water pipe on the athletic
field was awarded to w. D. Dick-
son for the sum of 8750. ”Also it
was voted at the meeting to file
the map of the field in the Town
Clerk's ofllce. with changes in eleva-
tions noted on the map.

The Saugetuck Neighborhood Cen-
ter Playground festival opened yea-
erday afternoon. The festival is in
the nature of a combination field
day and carnival. During the day
there will be sporting events. games
and races for the children. Prizes
will be awarded to the winners of
the various events and games. Each
contestant will wear the insignia of
the playground.
Several boxing matches were ar-
ranged.
. A greased pole was erected with
worthwhile prizes. The booths. of
course. are stacked with lots of good
things to eat and other articles of
value.
Open air dancing is another fea-
tilire to appeal to the younger peo-

The United States Civil Service
commission will hold an open com-
petitive examination at Weeiport for
the position of clerk in the West-
port post office within the next few
days.
Regular positions with full limo
service are seldom filled by direct
appointment from eligible registers.
Eligiblss are first appointed as sub-
siltutcs and are required to render
service whenever needed. Vacancies
in the regular force are filled by the
promotion of the senior substitutes.
Postmaster William Krause ex-
plained that this examination will be
held in order to secure persons who
may be put upon the eligible list. as
substitutes in the Westport office.
Also one of the applicants will be
appointed to deliver parcel post.
Since the Westport post office has
had city delivery. it is necessary to
have a separate parcel post delivery.
Postmaster Krausc was recently
appointed as a member of the ex-
ecutive committee of the Connec-
ticut association of postmaster-s. He
is the only second-class office post-
master having been appointed to
this committee. All others are in
first class office.
