Charles Owns. of Hartford. was
saved from a watery grave early
yesterday momlng when he was
taken with a cramp while swim-
ming out to the float at Compo
beach. The prompt action of Jack
Beattie and Harold Husslng saved
the man's life. When they saw the
man‘s predicament they swam out
to the victim and had him on the
shore in short order. lie was able
to walk after a while and appeared
none the worse for the near fatal
swim.

Despite the cool weather and
rough water. a large number of
bathers were seen in swimming’yes-
terday afternoon. The water was
very choppy and the whitecsps made
a very pretty picture from the above.

At the Compo Life Guards' week-
ly'meatlng Wednesday night. it was
voted by the members to procure
the services of a good coach for the
swimming team. The man has not
been picked as yet. but there are
several good men looking for the
place.

Mitchell Thursday night when an
over-heated gas stove caused a slight
fire. Mr. Mitchell is traveling
abroad and the house is occupied by
Mrs. Ellis for the summer. Tile
firemen made a. record run to the
scene of the fire and the blaze was
extinguished in short order with
chemicals.

Beach Wednesday night was such a
success and met with such approval
with the lovers of dancing that it
was decided to hold another like at.

A gala time is in store for those
who attend the treasure hunt to be
held at the Fairfleld County Hunt
club this afternoon. After the hunt
a. buffet lunch will be served. Danc-
ing will start at the clubhouse at
eight in the evening.

sections. One will be known as the
motor section and the other the
mounted section. Prizes will be
awarded the winners. All those
