Well Filled After
Recent Rainfall.
Norwalk. because of the recent
rains. is in the best condition of
years as concerns water supply.
Reservoirs are practically full and
the district to farthest possible from
any fear of scarcity. Scott's reser-
voir is reported as full to the brim;
llrcwn's is within three feet of being
full; and Grute's is at high level.
The city's worst water troubles
occurred in 1928 and 1924. In
September 1028 Scott's was empty:
Brown's was 11 feet lower than nor-
mal to an average depth of eight
foot; and Grutc‘s was down a foot.
In November 1924 the situation was
not quite as bad. but the department
was forced to salt the people to use
care and avoid waste. November 32.
the section had its first rein in over
a 50 day period of drought and then
Brown‘- was only three quarters
full: Scott’s was full: and Grute‘s
was a foot below normal.

Upon returning to Boulognc however
i wont immediately to bed to rest
and 1 hope that on the first favor-
able day this week. I will be ready to
start again.
Storm Prevented Swimming.
For an hour and a half 1 did my
boot to show those on the tug. by a
smile. that 1 was all right as the
sale tossed mo, and car-splitting
thunder followed the blinding flash-
es of lightning.
During this time. it could hardly
be said that l was swimming.
it was more l1kc waddllng to
keep afloat 1n the heavy son.
I could make 'no progress after the
storm l1i1, though I had traveled
three miles in the flrst hour and

favorable conditions. Having been
given my final coat of grease by Mr.
Burgess. I walked Into the water.
my way lighted by flares, and found
the channel unusually warm. There
was a. light rain but not enough to
cause disccmfmt or lulcifcrcnce.
All went well and Jack it oldmsn.
Jsbes Wolff. Burgess. Helmy, Mme.
81011 and others on the rug were
shouting encouragement. I knew I
was making good time. and my
greased body seemed to he slipping
through the water with the greatest
case. Then the wind began to quick-
en, lightning fleshed. thunder rolled
and the “clone channel out- did itself
to display its fury.

I felt the storm might blow over.
and kept at my work. Then the tug
became unmanageable. It- pitched
and lurched and swept this way and
that as (:.apt Bcortos held it at the
swimming pace. I could have cried
when the captain told Burgess and
Wolduian that he feared for the
safety of his boat in such a see at
the slow pace it was necessary for
him to keep and that he wanted to
quit.
Then everybody aboard the tug
came to the rail and told me I must
quit. Woldman. Burgess and Wolffe
bend calling fame to come out
when I had been In the water only
two hours and a half. but I stuck to
it for better than a. half hour long-
er.‘
1 this time I realized there was
nothing for me to do but abandon
the attempt in the midst of such a
storm. Besides. I learned that we
had been swept off our course as we
battled the storm. and that my
chances of success had been virtually
wrecked. _
During this last half hour I was
actually forced back over some of
the ground I had covered in order
to stay with the wildly tossing tug.
