Rays Extremely Short
The extraordinary penetrating
power of the new rays depend on
the extreme shortness of their
wave-length. Ordinary broadcasting
radio. or Heriaian rays. as everybody
knows. havo' waves from 100 to
8.000 meters. Langley. years ago,
found rays in the sun's end moon‘s
beams, quite invisible to the eye. of
a wave length of s hundredth of a
millimeter—that is a hundred thou-
sand times shorter than thousand
ineter radio. German scientists in-
ter found that rays ten times lonzer
than Langley's are sent out by spe-
cial lamps. and they extended the
radio region all the way {mm the
usual wave length down to as short
as one centimeter. or a thousand
times Langley‘s longest. The late
Professor Nichole, who died so tragi-
cally on the day the National Acad-
emy of Sciences building was dedi-
cated at Washington. closed up the

Yet by using vacuum apparatus
Schumann. liyman. Millikan and
others huvo traced the lamp spec-
trum hook to 0.00001-millimeter

X-ruys used in hospital practice.
They run two hundred times short-
er still, or about 5.000 times short-
er than yellow light. The new rays
which Millikan has found are 3.000
times shorter in their “one length
than the average X-rnys. What a
gamut from these to radio! Yet all
are alike in being Just wares, and
differ only in wave length. Some
i'ew affect us as light. but most are
wholly inxisihle. We may call them
the obscure cousins or light.
