deaths will show that nearly so
per cent. of them were in children
under six years of ago.
“To prevent these deaths ‘ fronl
diphtheria is unquestionably one of
the present problc of the Health
Department. it is fortunate in-
deed that diphtiicria. an easily prc-
ventable disease. should claim
twelve lives in a. single year. In
fact there is no disease which offers
such excellent opportunities for pre-
vention. The child can be tested and
if found to be' susceptible to diph~
thcrla can be treated and after a
brief period retestcd. Because of the
certainty of the prevention‘ of meth-
ods. many cities are already striv-
ing for the goal of "No deaths from
diphtheria by 1930." Many taro al-
ready close ,to this ideal. 0m. city
in New York state has been re-
warded for its anti-diphtheria cam-
paign by not having a single death
from this disease in nearly two
years.
