The town of Westport. can now re-
gain possession of a narrow strip of
land owned by the United States
government and wanted by the town
for road purposes. as the result of a
bill passed Friday by Congress.
Representative Schuyler I Merritt
introduced the bill and has kept in
close touch with its progress during
his illness for the last two weeks.
when he has been at his home.
The land lies across the Great
Marsh. from Wesiport harbor to
Long Island Sound. I is 108 foot
wide and 1.350 feet long. The gov—
ernment has owned it since 1841. but
the canal has long since been filled
up. »
Congressman Merritt succeeds in

the Rivers and Harbors bill. but it
was stricken out during the monster
