Threaten Strike
Bridgeport is faced with a barbers'
strike which it is expected will be
called Monday when the boss bar-
bors refuse a request from their
journeyman for a. raise in wages
from $26 to 830 a week.
Boss harbors say thev cannot raise
wagcsuwlthout increasing the price
of shaves and hair-cuts and that
policy they regard as ruinous be-
cause of the keen competition from
non-union shops.
Norwalk barber Journeymanre-
cently secured a raise in pay after a
strike hich lasted only a few hours.
One r suit of the boost in pay here
is that haircuts cost 60 cents in-
stead of 50

Many Catch Them Along
Shore Here—Their Ori-
gin Was. An Unsolved
Mystery.
Many in Norwalk are fond of
catching and eating cols. but how‘
many know whom eels spawn and
die. This was one of the mysteries
of science until it was solved by Dr.
Johannes Schmitic.
As a boy in Denmark. Johannes
Schmitto was very fond of eels—not
as pets but as food.
He was so fond of them that be
resolved to devote his life to a study
of the eel family. In the course of
his investigations he found the an«
swer _to a puzzle which scientists
have been racking their brains over
since man caught his first eel. and
they were a popular dish as far back
as the days of ancient Rome.
He found the place where eels
are born and where they die, if they
escape being caught and eaten.
Anybody who imagines that this
didn't rank as an important dis—
covery from a scientific standpoint
knows little about science.
Eels had been one of the mys-
teries of the ages to scientists.
The mystery was-—
Why did there seem to be no in-
fant eels?
All the eels ever caught. until Dr.
Schmitte wont ilshlng for them.
were pretty well grown up. It didn't
stand to reason they were born that
way.
Well. Dr. Schmiitc fished for baby
eels until he caught some. He caught
a. lot. He found their nursery. in
fact.
It's at the bottom of theQSargasso
Sea.
So Dr. Schmitto was made an hon-
ornry member of the National Acad-
emy of Science a few evenings ago
and all of scientific Washington is
nearly crazy about him. Hydro-
graphic and piscatoriai and oceano-
graphic circles regard his discovery
much as geographers regard the con-
quest of the poles.
Dr. Schmltte deserves a prize for
his patience as well as for his ro-
searches on eels.
He started out, in a little old
schooner of the Danish government's
-—no lit craft for deep sea cruising
at any stage of the game—with the
announcement that he meant to keep
going until he caught an eel in its '
earliest infancy.
He did keep at it—-for 21 years.
He kept sailing ’round and ’round
and 'round the Atlantic in ever nar-
rowing circlcs‘uniil finally. as he
drew in toward the Sargasso Sea—
that almost currentlcss expanse of
water off the Azores. where all the
ocean's derelicts are popularly but
erroneously supposed ultimately to
