Street Something New In
Car Cleaning Business.
Automobiles are even at this late
day merely cleaned on a usual
thing. But there is a station Just
[opened in Norwaik that not only
cleans the care but launders and
manlcuron them. The washing eta-
tlon referred to is the De Luxe.
opened on ltnymond street this
week, and owned by Frederick H.
Gnnunrr. it is believed to be abno-
iulely the first of its kind and has
drawn wondering comments from all
Honors and a steady stream of
trade magazine feature writers to
gaze and rush of! to tell the auto
washers of the country all about it.
To start with. Mr. Gsnuug had
given considerable ihouflrt to the
reasons why a car should be clean-
rd all over and how to do the work
in the proper way instead of the
usual dash of water. a lick. and then
a polish. The subject became an
enthusiasm no he took the trouble
to investigate the more approved
stations for o. radiusvor a hundred
miles and was struck by proof that
like car-cleaning business is. or was.
a foundling among businesses and
had been neglected by the ellicienry
exports.
So he built a specially designed
building for the purpose. two stories
in height and costing over 810.000.
lie installed all the labor and time-
savlng equipment now made for this
kind of work.
in this unique station. a car is

its own motive pen/or. on drums
that lit. the tour whoele. it is raised
four feet above the floor so that the
whole under side is as exposed as a
bathtub girl. The pit beneath the
Jack is deep enough so that the
average man can stand upright be-
neath the car.
Now as to water. The ordinary
pressure via the hose method was
not considered good enough so Mr.
(lunung installed a special pumping
machine that draws water from a
tank, or from the city pipes. through
it heater. Drawing from the tank
has its advantages since the mixture
in the tank can be kerosene. nee.
line, soapy water or any arouse sol-
vent. The solvent is therefore ap-
plied directly with the hustle to the
car and it is not necessary to dig
repeatedly, into a bucket of soap.
suds.
When the washing and chamois
work is finished the car is thorough-
ly gone over with a car vacuum
cleaner and polished. The building
plans included the placing of outlets
for the cleaners within easy reach
of any part.
Mr. Ganung declares that the ex-
periment has so far worked out tre.
mendouely well and that his expec-
tations. when he planned the build-
ing so that additions could easily be
made, are quite ilisoly to be fulfilled.
While he is the owner the station is
being managed by Frederick J. Gen
nuns. .lr.. his son.
