Epsom’s Famous Grand
Stand Comes Down In June
Epsom's race course where the
world famous Derby has been run
annually since 1780. is to lose its
96-year-old grandstand after this
year's race on June :2. The old
stand, which holds only 6,000 per-
sons. ls to be replaced by one ac-
commodating 20.000. .
While plans have been drawn and
arrangements made to build the new
stand. a. movement has been started
to make the building considerably
larger, and the finest in the world.
It is pointed out that the Flem-
ington stand, in Australia. accom~
modabes 70.000 persons. and that as
the attendance at the Derby aver-
ages 300.000 to half a million men
goers. Epsom should have the larg-
est stand possible. or at least one
seating 100,000 persons.
