him because his very uniqueness
makes this impossible.
Miss Mary McMahon criticized
Whitman‘s poetry and road with
much beauty of tone and expression
his poem written upon the death of
Lincoln entitled: "0 Captain. my
Captain." Miss Helen Kelly brought
the discussion of Whitman to a close
with a reading of excerpts from let-
ters of Emerson. Whittier. Glider-
vlcove‘ and -Thorenu.‘containlng cri-
ticisms of Whitman's poetical abil-
ity. .
It was found that while some of
those famous nlcn approved and so
some heartily dlsapprovcd of the
new klnd of genius all agreed that
ho is beyond classification and is no
doubt the originator of a new school
but poetry. ,

ard discussed the passing of Cardinal
lilercler from an article in the At-
lantic Monthly leaving her-collating
