Queer Cuss With Cigarette
Smoking Parrot Report-
ed Asked To Quit Local
Hotel.
A real mystery man. one of the
strangest characters that has been
seen in this city for many years.
arrived in town yesterday. bringing]
with him a weird tale 0! buried
treasure that. rivals the stories of
Captain Kidd and Treasure Island.
The visitor. who declined to disclose
his identity. other than to say he
might be known as "M. Sunshine"
was accompanied by a parrot which.
like his eccentric owner. was a most
peculiar sort ot bird.
The mystery man first attracted
attention by the squawklng oi the
parrot—a bird which his owner
claims is the only cigarette-smoking
parrot in captivity. The bird's
shrieks of “Old Gold. Old Gold" and
its refusal to be quiet during the
wee small hours of the morklng re-
sulted in “M. Sunshine" being asked
to dispense with his plumaged com-
panion or else leave a. well known
local hotel. when other westsworc
complaining that they Could not
sleep.
“M. Sunshine" protested in vain
that in Egypt. where he claimed to:

nence though he,would give no de-
tails of his personal history. parrots
were welcome in any hostelry. Ho
demanded that his bird be allowed
to remain in his room and raised
all sorts of a fuss when he was in-
formed that either the parrot must
go to the basement or he must

it Just wasn't done in American'ho-
tels but the mysterious stranger was
obdurate. And when an ultimatum
was delivered. “iii. Sunshine" wrap-
ped the gilded cage of his shriek-
ing bird in agreen baize cloth. paid
his bill and indignantly left.
To reporters who talked with him
he announced that he is a. well
known philanthropist and that he
has plans for spreading "Old Gold"
all over New England. Asked to ex-
plain his rambling assertio . he said.
“I cannot say Who I a or where
I come from. But in good time you
shall know. And when my secret ’s
out there will be old gold for every
man in this city." Hotel employees
said he apearod to be plentifully sup-
plied with money. but was eccentric
in many ways. He talked ramblingly
of "guineas," bags ot old gold."
“My treasure chest" and such things
and appeared to tie a. harmless sort

While reporters talked with. him.
he lighted a cigarette and after tak‘
ing a put! calmly handed the weld
to the parrot. The bird proceeded to
take it in his claw. pulled any at
it and then blew smoke at the news-
papermen. "It's his tavorite pastime.
I taught him to like cigarettes when
I first had him" the strange old
gentleman said. '
