Dear Sir.—
Will you kindly allow me enough
space in your valuable paper to ex-
press my opinion and views in re-
gard to the question of religious edu-
cation in our public schools. it is a
question that should arouse ell per-
sons who send or will send their
children to our public schools.
In front page articles and edl‘
torinls during the past. week or two
it haa been told that. it is proposed
by our honte grown conservatives
to launch publicly an organized at-
tempt to provide religious instruc-
tions for public school children of
Nornnlk. Efforts and plans have
been made and sponsored by the
Board of Education to gather the
support of the clergy of Norwalk
in regard to this movement. The
efforts of the promoters of religious
instruction in the public schools are
not to be baffled by one or two set-
backs. Criticism was expected befo. .
any efforts were launched and the
efforts made were only a feelcr.
Plans are being well made to put
this over.
The sponsors of this movement
did not state how many of the
children in our public schools are
growing up without religious teach.
ings of any kind. but at all accounts
things are in a horrible state and
it seems as though the majority of
children are without these teach-
lags. This can only show that the
parents of these children have no
call to religion which should be

Our forefathers had written and
signed a political document. where
they said religion is an individual
thing between each man and his
creator and he can worship as he
pleases and as he desires. Why did
they do this? The history of the
world warned them that the liberty
of man was not safe in the clutch-
es and grasp of any church. They
had read and seen the thumb-
serews. racks tho dungeons of the
Inquisition. They lmew that the
church had stood side by side with
the throne. They also know that it
they gave power to any church it
would corrupt the best church in
the world. They placed the power
into the hands of the great body of
people. Tito officers and servants of
the people are responsible.
In America we have today a so-
cial system that has outlived its
usefulness for it can no longer
promote the grcatest good of the
greatest number. The precepts of
primitive Christianity fit not. at all
into this social system; therefore
rcligionism, (Ihriatlanism i'or nil
they are worth. are invoked in the
attempt of propping up a. decadent
social system. The politicians of to-
day are using the church as a «look
to hide behind.
Religion being conceived of an an
antidote for revolutionary thought
the children must have orthodox

be that parents. tcurhcrs and child-
ren will come to look upon them-
selves us interfered with and unnec-
essarily pcsterrd by noisy busy-
bodies who might better employ
their time looking to saving their

control of the civilized world and

Christians were trained and are be-
ing trained. educated and drilled to
destroy their fellow Christians. The
world is covered with efforts to
protect Christians from Christians.
Millions are expended‘to construct
terrible engines of death. Thous-
ands of crimes are committed daily.
Men are at this moment. lying in
wait for their human prey. in the
twentieth century. If religion can
put a. step to this chaos. then by
all means provoke religious teach.
ings in our public schools.
I say give the children a chance.
Do not create a, child to be a post .
in the orthodox row: raise thinkers
and investigators. not disciples and
followers. Cultivate reason not
faith. If you think a man have:

honest. Don't cram the children's

I 11 Grade Crossings
Being Eliminated By
State Highway Dep’t
Projects for the elimination of 11
grade crossings in Connecticut are
now in various stages of fulfillment.
The improvements will cost over
$1,000,000. the expense being appor-
tioned by the public utilities com~
mission between the state. the towns
affected and the railroad company.
One of the projects is nearing
completion. three are under con-t
tract. three have been approved and
four are yet in the preliminary sur-
vey stage.
Following is a. list of the crossings
scheduled for removal in the im-
mediate future:
Bishop's Crossing. Plaintieid: Yel-
low Tavern Crossing. Windsor Locks;
Beckley's crossing, Berlin; Boston
Post Road Crossing, Old Saybrook;
Andover. Falls Village, Reynold's
Bridge. Thomaston; Castle Bridge.
north of Thomaston on Torrington
highway: Scott's Swamp, Bristol
pass, Madison-Clinton highway.
The eleventh project is in the town
of Washington where the work is
practically completed. 0! the total
cost of 862,979. the state contributes
only $12,000.00, for resurfacing the
highway. The balance of the cost.
approximately $51,000. is paid by the
town and the railroad company.
Three grade crossings were eliminat-
ed by a. complete relocation of the
highway.
