Auliffe. as auxiliary bishop of the
diocese of Hartford. at St. Joseph's
cathedral yesterday was one or the
impressive spectacles ever seen in
Connecticut.

Procession of Bishops.

The procession of bishops in their
purple robes. with their chaplains in
attendance. the priests of the diocese
to the number of 500 or more, and
members or monastic orders in their
left the
parish house andmarched into the
cathedral. Up the main aisle the
column advanced led by the cross
bearer and acolytes. followed by the
clergy who were later seated close
by the alter, the visiting bishops.

On approhching the high altar the
consecrator having prayed ascended
his throne on the Epistle corner.
The bishop-elect with his assistant
bishops went to the chapel and there
put on the amice. alb. cincture and
the stole, the last mentioned garment
being crossed in priestly'tashicn. The
assistant bishops put on their vest-
ments. The . bishop-elect had as
chaplains Rev. W. P. Roidy of South
Manchester, and Rev. Dr. '1‘. F. Dren-
nan of St. Thomas' seminary.
Bishop Nilan had as deacons of
honor Rev. Dr. iii. A. Sullivan and
RGV. P. H. hicClean of Bridgeport».
Tho chaplains of Bishop Hicks were
Rev. Ii. E. Shorteil oi Ridgeﬁc d. and
Rev. Dr. R. F. Fitzgerald of Derby.
and Bishop Murray had Rev. Dr. J.
J. McLaughlin of New Haven. and
Rev. J. FuMoore of New Cannon.
Apostolic Mandate Read.
When the ishop elect was in
readiness. the ‘onsecrntor took his
place on the zfrildstool at the mid-
dle of the altar with his back to it.
Bishop-elect McAuliffe vested and
wearing his birctta was led in by
two assistant bishops vested and
mitred. 0n approaching the Consc-
crator he uncovered and made pro-
found reverence. the assistant bish-
ops simply inclining their heads. as
they were their mitres. The latter
took seats at a little distance while
the bishop-elect faced the Consccra-
tor. After a. short pause they each
rose. the bishop-elect without his
birettn' and the. assistant bishops
without their mitcrs. Bishop Hickey
presented the candidate and the
Consecrator asked for the Apostolic
Mandate which was read by the no-
tary of the Consecrator, Rev. M. l”.

As the bishop-elect had already
made his confession of faith the
Consecrator read from the rubies
and made the interrogatories. The
examination being completed the as-
sistant bishops led the bishop-elect
to the Consecrator whose hand he
rcverently kissed. Then the Conse-
crator laying aside his mitt-e and turn-
ing towards the altar with his chap-
lains said the Confession of Faith.

choir sang the introit. kyrlc. ,and
gloria. the prayer was recited and
the epistle read. ‘
The bishop- ct had been taken
to the Chapel d his cope. laid

dals while he read the psalms and
prayers. He then receivedthe pec-
toral cross and the stile was adiust-
ed so as to hang from his shoulders.
He was vested‘with the tunic. dail-
matic. chasuble and maniple and
advanced to the altar where. stand.

Litany of Slants Chanted.

The collect of the day was read
and n collect for the Bishop-elect.
T110 prayer at this point was follow-
ed by Alleluia. and the ﬁrst verse of
the Epistle. The Consccrator took
his place again on tho faldsiool
wcaring his mitre. The bishop-
elect was led before the Coneeera—
tor where prayer was said, all then
prostrating themselves while the
Litany of the Saints was chanted
Upon rising the Consecrator holding
in his left hand the pastoral staﬂ
gave In the tone ot the lltsnies the
blessing, after which all again pro.‘
strated themselves as the cheater
ﬁnished the Litany, except that the
Bishop-elect was upon his knees be-
fore the Consecrator. who upon re-
ceiving the open book of the Gospels.
laid it upon the neck and shoulders
of the bishop-elect so that its print-
ed page touched the neck. The book
was supported by a. chaplain. Bands
were laid upon the head at the
bishop-elect in consecration or him.
The Consecrator laid aside his mitre
and gave the prayer invoking the
Holy host which is the essential
ritc which Episcopal powers is
conferred. the cencluding words at
the prayer being: "Fill up in Thy
priest the perfection of Thy ministry
and sanctity with the dew ot Thy
heavenly ointment this Thy servant
decked out with the ornaments of all
beauty."

As the bishop-elect had his head
bound with cloth by tho chaplains
the Consecrator on both knees began
the hymn. "Como Holy Ghost. Cre-
ntor Come." (Vcni Creator), which
was taken up by the others. After the
ﬁrst verse the Consecrntor rising laid
aside his ring and gloves and re-
ceivcd the uremia! from the chap-
lains. lie dipped his right thumb in
the holy chrism and anointed the
head at the. bishop-elect. making ﬁrst
the sign of the cross on the crown
and. then anointing the rcst of the
crown. Homodo the sign of the
cross three times over the head of
the bishop-elect. The consecrator
cleansed his thumb with bread
crumbs while a hymn was sung.

The Consecrator began the anti-
phon which the choir completed.
the old. being removed from
Bishop McAuiiftc‘s head so that the
Consccrator could again anoint him
which was done three times. The
holy water was sprink d and the
pastoral sintf given at or it had
been consecrated. Tho Consccrator
blessed the bishop" rinr. and the
chaplains removed the book of
gospels from the shoulders oi! the
consecrated bishop with the ad-
monition to preach to the people.
The kiss oi! peace was given by the
Consecrator and the assistant bish-
ops each saying "Peace be with
Thee." Bishop McAulifi’o returned to
the chapel where his head was
cleansed with bread crumbs and a
cloth. the Consccraior meanwhile
going on with the Mass up to tire
Otfcrtory.

Consecrator is Thanked

After the offeriory and gospel the
newly consecrated bishop and the
assistant bishops knelt before the
consecrator who was offered two
lighted torches; two loaves of bread
and two vessels of wins. The new
bishop went to the Epistle side and
read fromhls missal. The host was
prepared for consecration for both

ed. wine sufficient for both being
placed in the chalice. Then followed
the consecration of the 'bread and
(wine. the service of, purification.
communion and post-communion.
